El exorcismo de Emily Rose es una de las películas de terror más vistas y se basa en la historia real de Anneliese Michel, una joven alemana que empezó a mostrar problemas de salud y que terminó sometida a intensas sesiones de exorcismo, porque sus padres y dos sacerdotes creían que estaba poseída. Era llevada a misa dos veces por semana. Cuando tenía 16 años, tras algún tiempo de haber dejado un tratamiento psiquiátrico, empezó a tener convulsiones y epilepsia. Además, cayó en depresión profunda.
Cerca de cuatro años después sus padres dijeron que estaba endemoniada, porque gritaba sin cesar, supuestamente escuchaba voces; y, desestimando consejos médicos, acudieron a su iglesia. Al principio se les dijo que ella necesitaba atención médica, pero su familia insistía en que se trataba de una posesión.
Así que encontraron la ayuda de dos religiosos, quienes obtuvieron el permiso de autoridades de la Iglesia para empezar con las sesiones de exorcismo. Fueron 67 episodios en los que la joven pasaba atada a una silla, sin poder comer ni tomar líquidos. Cuando falleció, la autopsia determinó que perdió la vida por malnutrición y deshidratación. Tenía 23 años de edad y pesaba 30 kilos.
Tanto sus padres como los religiosos fueron acusados de homicidio negligente y sentenciados a prisión. Sin embargo, en una entrevista concedida en 2005, los progenitores insistieron en que la joven murió por los supuestos demonios, se añadió en la publicación.
Después de su muerte su tumba es un sitio turístico.
Su nombre verdadero es Anna Elisabeth Michel, nació 21 de septiembre de 1952 Leiblfing, Baviera, Alemania Occidental y falleció el 1 de julio de 1976 con 23 años, sus restos se encuentran sepultados en el conocido cementerio Klingenberg Cemetery, Klingenberg am Main de Alemania.
