ENGLISH

In that life of ours, good people do great deeds

As always it is a pleasure to participate again in one of their initiatives so full of good vibes, that help to bring back pleasant memories of personal experiences that were stored in the farthest trunk of memories in my mind, this particular activity made me think a lot, as there are certainly many good deeds of positive people you see in the streets, at work, even in the place where you live, but remembering a specific one that is outstanding enough to expose it in detail, was a more complicated task.

Before starting this story, I want to clarify that although I usually write fiction stories, this is not the case, everything I will tell you in these lines is totally real experiences that are part of the memories of my life, which I wanted to immortalize as a tribute to my brother as well as to people I met doing excellent things and who unfortunately are no longer with us.

In my world of thoughts passed through my brain like a movie at an accelerated speed, many tasks of kind people who in one way or another contributed to help someone could be considered the good deed of the day, of those I can relate some short ones, like for example the bus driver who did not accept the payment of the fare, to a young lady who looked quite poor and was carrying 3 small children; the boy who stopped the traffic exposing his body in an avenue to save a scared little dog trying to cross; even a security officer who opened the emergency door so that my brother and I could say goodbye to my grandmother before she passed away, violating the rules of the hospital area where children were not accepted.

There is also the businessman from Vargas who dedicated 30% of his company's monthly profits to deliver layettes to pregnant women or toys to the children at the medical center in La Guaira; even something as trivial as the man at the grocery store, who once, when the crisis was at its peak, realized that I did not have enough money to pay for all the food I needed and did not allow me to return the products, accepting only the promise that I would pay when I could, that was a very important gesture in my moments of economic despair that helped me a lot, giving me time to settle the account a month later, when my income improved.

But all these circumstances, although significant at the time, in my opinion, were common enough to go unnoticed and get lost in the past, so it was necessary to intensify the search in my memory to find a more salient fact until I found it.

Perhaps it did not come to me so immediately, because I did not experience it firsthand, nor did I witness it directly, but its results undoubtedly made it possible to save the life of a person, with the sum of many wills together, which makes it a special moment that demonstrates the goodwill of humanity when it is most needed.

My younger brother, whom God rest his soul, passed away a few years ago from Diabetes, a terrible disease that was slowly consuming his body since he was a child. Because of his condition, he needed to inject insulin 3 times a day, not just any type of insulin, but a special one that contained anti-allergic compounds which avoided certain complications with other ailments and adverse reactions.

Well, like all rare medicines, there were very few manufacturers, so the specific brand he required was brought to our country by only one laboratory, whose headquarters were in Denmark, which is why the containers had to be imported from that remote place, with all the complications that this can mean.

My family has always been quite humble, with limited income, for that reason it was impossible to afford large supplies of the drug privately, so we depended exclusively on the one given monthly by Social Security, at a certain point, problems arose with the issue of dollars and imports, affecting the licenses and generating a delay in the supply because of the CADIVI by then. Thus, we received the news that the free insulin would not arrive for another 3 months.

With the help of relatives, friends, and several companies my mother made a great effort to buy the first doses, but then an even worse difficulty arose, she had the money, but the few units in the pharmacies had run out or were out of stock, leaving my brother without the possibility of administering the insulin that kept him alive, leaving only two vials at home, which is anything would be enough for 15 days.

It is here where a true miracle happened with the sum of many good wills, driven by the relentless spirit of my mother, who did not rest for a moment until she found the solution.

Since it was impossible to find the injections with the suppliers, she decided to ask for help from the Danish government directly. So she wrote a letter with all the details of what was happening, adding the doctor's reports, and went to the Embassy headquarters, which was in a very distant and exclusive place in Caracas, where not even public transportation was close, but after walking a long way she arrived at the site with the intention of not moving from the door until someone with the capacity to solve the problem attended her.

To my mother's surprise, the attention was spectacular, as soon as the soldier guarding the entrance reported the case, a very elegant man came out to receive her, who accompanied her to a beautiful reception room worthy of a palace, the man was the private secretary of the Ambassador of the Queen of Denmark and very kindly took note of each of the things that my mother exposed, then invited her to go to the dining room to eat something, while he contacted his boss and looked for a solution.

After about an hour and after enjoying a great lunch, the kind personage spoke to my mother again and asked her to please wait a little longer, giving time for the Ambassador to arrive at the residence to talk to her and give her an answer, which was already being processed at the Ministry of his country.

My mother tells me that she has never felt so well attended in her life, nor was she so pleased with the actions of such efficient people in their work, something we are not used to expecting from a public employee in Venezuela.

After a couple of hours, the Ambassador arrived at the place, they introduced himself with all the magnificence of someone who represents a Queen and invited her to his office, where he gave her the best news that we as a family could receive in our lives.

The Diplomat told her that they had contacted the president of the manufacturing laboratory and that he had a telephone conversation with the businessman directly, so he got a complete donation of all the insulin that my brother will need for life, and he also told her that the first doses were already in the hands of a guard of the laboratory, He also told her that the first doses were already in the hands of a guard of the Ministry of Royal Affairs of Denmark to be sent by plane in a diplomatic bag, so they were expected to be in Venezuela within 24 hours approximately, which made my mother cry with joy and with much affection and violating the protocol, she gave the man a big hug of gratitude.

Needless to say that the Ambassador's word was kept to the letter, the next morning a motorcycle escort brought the medicine to our door and my brother received his insulin supply without fail, until his last day of life.
