Grandfather's teachings, on my love-hate with the Sun

Hello dear friends of this community, I want to take this opportunity to extend my most sincere wishes of congratulations on your anniversary, at the same time that it is the beginning of a long career of growth.

Many know that I live in a coastal area of my country, which has made me have a very close relationship with the immense star that decorates our blue skies. The sun is simply something impossible to ignore in this part of the world because next to the sea, it fills any of the directions where you can look, which at times can become tedious, it is precisely at this point, where I want to start my life anecdote, at the exact moment when the sun became unbearable, because of the extreme heat to which my body was subjected. Today I will tell you how, just as a child, I began to have a relationship of love and hate with the primordial giver of life, as the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia named it.

A few years ago, during my high school years, when my mind began to go beyond the barriers of childhood to enter the development of adolescence, in the city where I live there was a major heat wave, which raised the temperature to about 40 degrees Celsius, or at least that's how it was perceived by my body at that time, reaching the point of absolute despair in my life.

In those times, to reach my place of studies, I had to walk under the inclement sun for about 20 minutes a day, which in distance would be more than a kilometer, the tedious journey was precisely at the peak of the affection for the earth that sent her fiery lover, at noon, since classes began exactly at 12:30 pm. In addition to that, the main avenue at that time was little less than a desert, there was not a single plant that gave some shade and the hot breeze of the Caribbean Sea hit hard against your face while trying to move forward between the occasional gusts of beach sand that rose like whirlpools, by the steam of the hot asphalt of the streets.

As you can imagine with that unbearable heat, added to the school uniform and the condition of my body at that age, full of hormones and glands in full growth, in a few minutes I was completely soaked in sweat and with a stinky smell, no matter how much deodorant I tried to use, not to mention how sticky your skin becomes by contact with salt and moisture from the sea breeze, which turns you into a kind of gummy sponge to which the dust sticks, like bees to honey.

This bothered me a lot since as you can imagine, I would leave the house perfectly bathed, perfumed, and groomed, to dazzle as many girls as I could. However, I always ended up arriving at the high school looking only slightly less than homeless.

Years have passed since those controversial events that marked my life with deep feelings that today only make me laugh, but inevitably remind me of the teachings of my beloved grandfather.

It happens that one of those afternoons, my bitterness against the sun reached such an extreme degree that I entered the house very angry, shouting any number of rude words by the oppressive warm environment where I was submerged, at that moment I prayed that the dismal space rays of the bright star, succumbed under the heavy blanket of rain clouds or at least an eternal darkness, where the night was perennial.

Hearing the amount of nonsense I was uttering to the 4 winds, my grandfather called me, exposing his singular character of a severe man, also with a very bad face and speaking in a scolding tone telling me:

— "Be careful with the words you say, never speak ill of the sun, because he is the source of life and for some, he is a representation of the magnificence of God himself."

He then took me by the arm and led me to the garden to show me his garden of paprika plants, where he showed me a total of 11 shots of different sizes, using them as an example, my grandfather pointed out to me that the bush that looked the tallest, greenest and most glamorous, was precisely the one that had the blessing of receiving the sun's rays most of the day; while the last one, which was under the shade of a large avocado tree, looked sad, small, yellowish, and decadent, with almost no chance of surviving, much less of one day being able to produce fruit.

My grandfather, with his simple example, made me understand that human beings and all living beings on earth are the same as paprika plants. For this reason, we need sunlight to feed ourselves, at the same time we need to produce a series of vitamins and thus be able to continue to walk this planet. These wise words today are for me a great memory of my grandfather, which is part of his family legacy.
