Hello my friends readers of the column "In Anti-Depression Mode". I am pleased to greet you once again as well as all the members of the “Holos&Lotus” community who kindly receive me and allow me to publish my content here. Here I am again with a series of interesting topics. We continue analyzing each of the most common and important symptoms of clinical depression. But not only will we describe them, but I will share some recommendations for overcoming that particular symptom, as well as depression in general, all based on my personal experience and suggestions from mental health experts. Without further ado, let's get started.

No quieres hacer nada, nada te motiva. Nada.

If you have read me before, you know that I am a survivor of depression. I have told my story before, recounting my experience with this illness and what the process of overcoming it was like.

One of the most characteristic symptoms of this disorder is anhedonia. What is this? It is that feeling of not feeling like doing anything, including, (and this is the saddest and most desperate), those things you like to do. They seem irrelevant, silly, they don't generate any emotion in you. I remember very well that feeling bored (something extremely unusual for me since I am very active), but anhedonia does not discriminate whether you are the busiest guy or the most proactive woman in town. When it comes, it hits and drains your batteries. You don't want to do anything, nothing motivates you. If you loved to cook, not anymore. If you love to play soccer, you see the ball and it doesn't give you any pleasure. Do you like to dance? The music plays and you go and turn it off. No writing, no movies, no social networks, no hanging out with your friends. Nothing.

So when someone is unmotivated, bored, lying down or sitting without wanting to do anything, refusing invitations to do things, especially those that we know you like to do, you have to worry, especially if this behavior goes beyond 15 days in a row. Because, like many symptoms of depression, anhedonia is not exclusive to depression, but when it is combined with other symptoms and for a certain period of time (2 to 3 weeks), we must be alert.

It is very, very unpleasant to feel this way. I do not have fond memories of those moments. Especially because many people around me did not understand my situation. They told me that I was a bore, a party pooper, bitter. That I was not normal. In my case, I was always a shy, lonely person who enjoyed solitude and silence. But, with the arrival of depression, these characteristics were reinforced. Before, I could suddenly agree to go out to play or go for a walk, for example. But when I was already depressed, it was extremely difficult for me to do so.

¿Cómo superar la anhedonia?

How to overcome anhedonia?

First of all, I must refer you to this post where I explain in a summarized way and according to my point of view, the ways we can overcome depression and remember that although this symptom is not the only symptom of depression, it must be treated in an integral way with the rest. That is, it is not treated individually, but in combination with the rest of the symptoms. However, we can put into practice some recommendations to reduce that feeling of boredom and lack of motivation to live.

  • Accept that you feel this way and that it is not convenient for your personal well-being.
  • Analyze the reasons that keep you in this state of apathy and listlessness. Knowing the causes can help you make the right decisions to get out of it.
  • On your own it may be very difficult for you to want to do things, anhedonia is a state that controls our will (if we allow it). So accept invitations to play, go out or eat. As difficult as it may seem, we can exercise the little will that anhedonia leaves us with. So let yourself be carried away by that friend, your partner or your colleague.
  • In tune with the above, don't do things out of obligation, because that would be counterproductive and would demotivate you more. Take it rather as a treatment, as an experience and a way to grow.
  • Be patient. Do not despair, no matter how overwhelming it is to feel this way, stay calm. Despair can trigger other symptoms such as anxiety, stress, sadness, insomnia (not sleeping) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much), moodiness, anger attacks.
  • Keep a positive and optimistic attitude, trusting that this is just a stage, a passing moment. Although, if it is part of a diagnosed depression, you should be more alert and attentive to your thoughts and feelings.

The symptom of anhedonia is a is part of a series of symptoms that complement or reinforce the depressive disorder as a whole. It must be faced and treated individually, without disregarding the rest of the symptomatology of clinical depression. Remember also, that the one who writes to you, suffered from this disease and I can attest that, although it costs a lot, it is possible to prevent it, treat it and overcome it. Do not lose hope.
