I must start by saying, that I am not very given to these seasonal celebration dates and maybe you will understand me a little after reading me. I love the beach, the sun, the sea, a river, a pool, a cold beer, and sharing with the family in peace and relaxation. But, I don't like the commotion, the disorder, the noise, and one of the things that most characterize these dates: the endless queues to get to any beach or tourist site. And thinking about this, I remember once we went to spend a few days at the Carnival of Carupano, perhaps the most emblematic in the whole eastern part of the country. But, getting to Carupano during Carnival can become as chaotic as if you were going to the carnivals of El Callao in the state of Bolivar. The lines to enter the city are stressful. The long line becomes a challenge and can be irritating when you look at other daring or rather abusive drivers, who get out of line and move forward without respect, wanting to get there faster than anyone else. And tell me when it's their turn to rejoin the queue right in front of you. By God! at that moment you wish you had the Mach 5 of Speed Racer, but not to jump out or soar over the endless queue, but to buzz a couple of missiles at the bully or maybe chop his car with the destructive front saws.

I am not sure if it was on that occasion that the abusive drivers should have been thankful that I did not have a car equipped with destructive weapons. But being already on the beach, camping in tents, enjoying the days of rest, the weather, the sun, the family company and suffering the mess of people everywhere, the hustle and bustle, I decided to go out and buy a couple of cases of cold beers, to make the atmosphere more refreshing. Good heavens, a trip that on a normal day wouldn't take 20 or 30 minutes, led my family to think that maybe I had been kidnapped, that I had joined some racket and was who knows where dancing samba or even that I had fallen madly in love and was with another girl. All possible scenarios, but no, I spent about 5 hours in endless queues to get to where I had to buy and on the way back with almost all the alcohol consumed from waiting in the queues, the noise and the crowd of people and cars everywhere. Almost drunk, I got to where we were located and said: — That cart will move again when we go home.

I never went back to the carnivals of Carupano and I have never been to those of El Callao, and according to what I am told, to enter the town in those days is almost an impossible mission. So I, pass with those carnivals. Instead, I dedicated myself to enjoying the Carnivals of Maturin, also very crowded and well organized in the past. My oldest son was maybe two years old and on that occasion, the car was stopped, so we went by public transport, early to return early. Nice and fun to see the parades and floats, all very nice and well worked, with care and dedication, the dancers and costumes, the enthusiasm they put into the choreography, the joy of the children for so much color in these parties. But we could not miss the disorder, the abuse, and the unconsciousness of many people who do not respect others. We left unscathed from the abuse of some people throwing water left and right along the route of the comparsas and decided to board the transport to return home. Already seated and while we were advancing near a square, I watch as a group of thugs go to the unit with buckets of water, taken from who knows where to bathe everyone on board. Quickly, most of us realized the intentions of the ill-adapted and hurried to close the windows. To my misfortune, the one that corresponded to me was stuck and I could not close it in time, so I received the nauseating and repeated cataract of cold water, which left me all soaked and almost boiling with rage.

— Well, Ramón, getting wet during Carnival is normal.
Of course, when you are enjoying it. But I didn't let that discourage me and the next time I went again to the carnivals in Maturin, this time accompanied by some neighbors from the block. Everything was wonderful, the company of friends, some drinks, the bululú, the music, the comparsas, the people dancing and happy. Drunk people. And as they say: drunk is not people. A commotion forms very close to where I meet my family. We start running, shouting, bottles flying, blows and kicks, we run, we move away and take shelter from the noise. After a while and when we find our companions, they, quite drunk, begin to argue with me about the fact that I ran away: "— Well, my friend, you had to beat yourself up with us, that's why we are in the company!". It turns out that these neighbors liked to fight and together with the bad drinking, they made carnivals a stressful time for their families. Already quite disillusioned by the bad moment experienced by my family, we went home and to this day, we have not gone back to carnivals anywhere other than a remote and half unknown town in the country, such as Moitaco in the state of Bolivar or perhaps Urica in the state of Anzoátegui.

As the last anecdote, let me tell you these that involve military, centipedes, carnivals, and comparsas. I was maybe 12 or 13 years old and in festive times like carnival, we were sent to spend the days with grandparents and uncles in the Valles del Orituco in the state of Guarico. My uncle Vicente, a farmer, had several tomato fields and every day very early in the morning he would go out to the fields about 12 km from the town. It was my turn at about 10 or 11 in the morning to take him the food on a bicycle and I would take a rural dirt road. On one occasion, I saw something strange in the middle of the road. As I approached, I stopped instantly, startled and fearful to see that it was a huge centipede, shiny and black. It was simply standing there in the middle of the track, and I was simply too scared to go back to town. My uncle, quite annoyed, was forced to return early from work because of the lack of food and then the respective scolding for the "caraqueño boy" who was afraid of a little worm. For me, he was a real monster.

As an adult, while I was doing my military service, I had to attend some military exercises or maneuvers in the area of Caicara del Orinoco in the State of Bolivar. We were there for about a month and it was precisely for some carnival dates. On one occasion, we had to stand night guard at the entrance of the fort, which is just off the main road. It was about 1 am when suddenly a group of about 12 motorcyclists stopped in front of the entrance. One of the units had a failure and they were taking advantage of the only lighted pole, who knows how many meters around, to fix the motorcycle. After several minutes, they fixed the problem and continued on their way. We reported the presence of a group of people belonging to a carnival troupe since they were all dressed as Indians. The next day, we became the mockery of the entire military detachment, since it was a group of indigenous people from the area and they were not dressed as Indians. It was their usual attire and we were told that if it had been a guerrilla group, how foolishly we would have been fooled.
