Conversando con mis ancestros. El poder de mi nombre. [ESP-ENG]

Hi friends, when I read the topic of the initiative, at first I didn’t feel like participating since I have never been interested in looking for the meaning of my name, also because according to my mom’s story she didn’t choose it for a specific purpose. But after reading several publications I realized that I did have things to tell about the origin of my name.

I will start by saying that my maternal grandparents named my mom after the calendar with names of saints, that was the way it was at that time, parents were guided by that calendar to name their children and my mom’s name is María Maura. In the case of my dad, he has only one name, Agustín, and he carries it in honor of his dad’s uncle (my grandfather) and he was the person who raised and educated him. When my parents got married for some reason they didn’t want their daughters to be named after family members and they were not going to be guided by the calendar of saints, that’s when the search for a name for their first daughter (my older sister) began.

My mother tells that she had no idea what name to give him, so with the help of some neighbors they looked for one, I imagine that at that time the more different the name was, the nicer it sounded, because they found Berlis Soley, yes, just as you read it. A name that has nothing to do with the family, totally sought by the contemporaneity of the time.

The same year my mom got pregnant again with this beautiful girl that I am, again the search begins but this time my dad had a name for me and it was Beatriz Adriana, like the ranchera singer, she was a very pretty woman and he loved it. But my mom didn’t like the name Beatriz, according to her it was for an old lady hahaha. Again with her neighbors they looked for a name but this time the intention was that the name had to combine with Berlis, so one of the neighbors quickly said Beysy, and guess what? That’s how I stayed. When my dad went to the registry and the secretary asked him for the girl’s name and if she had a middle name, he answered Adriana. So my name was Beysy Adriana and my dad was happy because even though he couldn’t get me to carry the full name of his favorite singer, at least I had the middle name.

In all my years I don’t know anyone with the same name as me, it is not something I am proud of either, because now I have a problem in the registry where my name is written Beisy, this can bring me problems in the future and to amend that fact in my birth certificate I need the services of a lawyer, something that is expensive and for now I can’t do anything, so I hope it won’t harm me later on.

I already told you the origin of my name, which at first did not have a great meaning for not being a common name, so I can give it the meaning I want. Although to write this publication I searched the internet for the meaning and found a page called Namekun.com where there is a definition of the name in several areas of life. I want to say that I didn’t like very much the meaning of my name according to that page, since it describes it as a superficial person, worried about material goods. Something that I don’t consider to identify or define my life. In what I agreed in the social field, since I am kind, open and with good humor.

As a consequence of having a different name and having legal problems with it, I have not liked the strange or combined names, difficult to write, where you have to spell the name when it is given in any establishment, it is annoying that people ask you how to spell it? And if they don't ask you, they will probably spell it incorrectly. When I got pregnant and when I found out it was a boy I told my husband that I wanted an easy to spell name so the child would not have to go through what I had to go through with my name, my husband did not want him to be named after him, so we chose Andrés Alfonso, an easy and new name for the family. With my little girl's name I consider myself guilty, I wanted a name similar to the child's and I even thought about calling her Adriana as my middle name but in the end I decided for Andrea and my husband in honor of his mother chose the middle name and we called her Andrea del Carmen.

I do not believe that the name defines what you are or what you are going to do in life, for that there is free will and each person is different, free to create their own destiny and live their life to the fullest. What I do believe is that as parents we should think about the harm we do to our children when we call them by names that no one can remember, let alone write, forcing them in many cases to use diminutives and common nicknames that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
