Cuando hablamos de Compromiso cognitivo leve, nos referimos a un coeficiente intelectual ubicado entre 50-55 y 70, dificultades en el desarrollo intelectual y en las conductas adaptativas.Sin embargo es de destacar que si desde niños reciben la estimulación adecuada pueden llevar una vida normal e incluso hasta pasar desapercibidos en cuanto a este aspecto, esto lo digo por todo lo observado a través de los años.Claro está que la capacidad de respuesta a nivel intelectual será más tardía y pueden no llegar a ser capaces de realizar una producción escrita de alto nivel pero hacen el intento por plasmar sus ideas si han recibido estimulación y retroalimentación constante, caso contrario si nunca ha pasado.
Y es precisamente en este punto donde puedo ahondar por mi experiencia, en un taller laboral en Venezuela que por cierto hay muy pocos, la población atendida mayormente es aquella con síndrome de down y compromiso cognitivo. Como instructor en el taller de madera atendí grupos de 8 a 10 jóvenes con edades cronológicas entre 16 y 35 años, la mayoría con compromiso cognitivo leve, sólo 2 con compromiso moderado máximo en cada grupo (estos grupos lo elegía el equipo interdisciplinario) debido a que estos debían manipular herramientas como martillo, caladora y trabajaba en el taller solo con ellos, en aquellos tiempos no se contaba con el personal suficiente, no todo el mundo desea trabajar en este campo.
Greetings community, respect for diversity, inclusion, has become a point of debate today, today I want to address the inclusion but from the point of view of special education, from my point of view product of many years working as an instructor in a workshop in the area of wood but with young people with mild cognitive impairment, this experience led me to study, prepare and finally graduate as a teacher of Special Education.
When we talk about Mild Cognitive Compromise, we refer to an IQ between 50-55 and 70, difficulties in intellectual development and adaptive behaviors, however it is noteworthy that if they receive adequate stimulation from childhood they can lead a normal life and even go unnoticed in this aspect, I say this because of everything I have observed over the years. It is clear that the capacity of response at intellectual level will be later and they may not be able to make a high level written production but they make the attempt to express their ideas if they have received constant stimulation and feedback, otherwise if it has never happened.
And it is precisely at this point where I can delve into my experience, in a workshop in Venezuela that by the way there are very few, the population served mostly is that with Down syndrome and cognitive compromise. As an instructor in the wood workshop I attended groups of 8 to 10 young people with chronological ages between 16 and 35 years, most with mild cognitive compromise, only 2 with moderate compromise maximum in each group (these groups were chosen by the interdisciplinary team) because they had to handle tools such as hammer, jig saw and worked in the workshop only with them, at that time there was not enough staff, not everyone wants to work in this field.
Afortunadamente nunca tuve que enfrentar accidentes con las herramientas, puedo decir que estos jóvenes con compromiso cognitivo leve eran capaces de esperar su turno, si bien eran curiosos y esto es característico de ellos, el tiempo en la institución les permitió crear un patrón de conducta en los espacios. En la institución conté con el apoyo de la terapista del lenguaje, terapista ocupacional, profesor de eduacción física y psicólogo, ellos me orientaron y estaban siempre monitoreando la conducta de los jóvenes y las normas de seguridad. Estos jóvenes eran capaces de manipular las herramientas, elaborar tablas para picar, bandejas, repisas, todos los productos al final eran expuestos con mucho orgullo por sus creadores y los instructores.
Como instructor siempre tuve cautela en el sentido de la manipulación de herramientas dada la condición de los jóvenes pero cada sonrisa me daba satisfacción de que estaba haciendo algo grande y era motivar y darle herramientas a estos jóvenes para su integración en la sociedad. En este punto puedo decir que es importante que los padres insistan en ello porque la idea es que cuando ya no estén en este mundo sus hijos puedan desenvolverse en la sociedad, aprendan un oficio que les permita sobrevivir y sentirse útiles, esto es importante para cualquier persona y mas cuando se tiene una condición especial.
En Educación Especial cualquier logro por mínimo que sea es relevante, los procesos de aprendizaje son lentos pero con constancia, entusiasmo y apoyo tanto de maestros como padres el resultado será maravillosos para estos jóvenes quienes desan sentir que su entorno le respeta y valora. Elegí la mejor profesión del mundo, soy maestro jubilado de Educación Especial y aunque a muchos de mis alumnos tengo años sin ver aún mantengo contacto con varios de ellos, incluso me llaman en mi cumpleaños,otros tristemente han fallecido producto de las patologías que les aquejaban pero mi satisfacción mas grande es saber que la mayoría pudo salir adelante y hasta tener sus propios emprendimientos porque con amor todo es posible.Cuando veas a una persona con una condición especial por favor no lo mires con lastima, miralo con respeto porque es un miembro mas de la sociedad, un ser humano igual que tu y yo.
Fortunately I never had to face accidents with the tools, I can say that these young people with mild cognitive impairment were able to wait their turn, although they were curious and this is characteristic of them, the time in the institution allowed them to create a pattern of behavior in the spaces. In the institution I had the support of the speech therapist, occupational therapist, physical education teacher and psychologist, they guided me and were always monitoring the behavior of the youngsters and the safety rules. These young people were able to manipulate the tools, elaborate chopping boards, trays, shelves, all the products at the end were exhibited with pride by their creators and instructors.
As an instructor I was always cautious in the sense of manipulating tools given the condition of the young people but every smile gave me satisfaction that I was doing something great and that was to motivate and give tools to these young people for their integration into society. At this point I can say that it is important that parents insist on it because the idea is that when they are no longer in this world their children can function in society, learn a trade that allows them to survive and feel useful, this is important for anyone and more so when you have a special condition.
In Special Education any achievement no matter how small is relevant, learning processes are slow but with perseverance, enthusiasm and support from both teachers and parents the result will be wonderful for these young people who want to feel that their environment respects and values them. I chose the best profession in the world, I am a retired Special Education teacher and although I have not seen many of my students for years I still keep in touch with several of them, they even call me on my birthday, others have sadly passed away due to the pathologies that afflicted them but my greatest satisfaction is to know that most of them were able to move forward and even have their own businesses because with love everything is possible, when you see a person with a special condition please do not look at him with pity, look at him with respect because he is a member of society, a human being just like you and me.
