Some great information was released in the Discord Developer Log on the 22nd. @elindos laid out a clean roadmap for which features are coming soon and in what order, which I will copy paste here:
"(update #1) Away Teams
(update #2) Research Teams
(update #3) Full production and life on colony (some of it already deployed on update 2)
(update #4) Spaceship repair / quests / tester quest rewards / colonization challenge (and we begin our test season right after this challenge and fixing some bugs detected there
(update #5) Recolonization and space battles"
Test planets will also be fully flushed out by update #4, so if you still haven't gotten your test planet, get it now! Time is definitely running out.
A "space battle simulator" mode which is intended to be a weekly or bi-weekly event where players can earn rewards for helping to test bugs and features of space combat.
Last but not least, the WAX sale is nearing, as EXODE will be submitted for review near the end of October or early November! Quite a few people have been waiting for this and I can't wait to see the inevitable influx of new Pilots!

The accuracy is rather low but does that really matter when you have enough bullets to cut a hole in a wall? Pair this with Defensive Ammo or Autoguided Ammo and spray even more!
