I never thought I’d be so excited to build our own electromagnetic. My son had a school science project due and sent me off to the hardware store with a very short list of what to get.

Short length of copper wire
2 nails

Thank the Lord for generous hardware store staff who gifted me 2 nails and pulled a small piece of wire out of the workshop. It seemed a waste to buy a whole bag of nails and roll of wire. Whoop! We like these people.

So here’s what we used.

Equipment:
1x 1.5V AA battery
1x length of copper wire
Roll of electrical tape
2x nails
Pen knife
Pliers

How to build it:

  1. Strip the wire of its insulation - this was the hardest part
  2. Wrap the wire around the nail with a length in either side left over
  3. Tape the ends of the wire to the negative and positive ends of the battery
  4. Touch the electrified nail to the other nail and it will lift it up
