Good morning everyone
This morning I want to share with us my recent art piece which I title "Iyalode". The drawing shows a woman with a big traditional head gear, cowries from on her forehead and a staff of power beside. Well this is my imaginary representation of an iyalode.
Now who is an "Iyalode"?
Iyalode is the highest female cheiftancy title among the Yoruba tribes. She is given names like the "Queen of women", "Mother of women" etc. She oversees the affairs of the female in the land financially and politically. She oversee the market affairs too. She is the strongest and the most powerful female. Left to me I'd even say she's more powerful than the queen. During vital decision makings, her views are greatly noted.
Interpretation of the art
The iyalode is usually a woman of success, wealth and dignity and so in the background I put an animal skin there which shows wealth and power. She usually dress so beautifully and I represent that with the several steps gele (headgear). The cowries on her forehead also represent the wealth she has and control. The staff shows her powerful status.
About the art.
The drawing was made on Autodesk sketchbook using a stylus pen. I used combination of colors on a black background using the scribble pattern for the drawing. For the scribble pattern I used majorly primary pencil all through.
