THX Onyx - This little dongle will improve the sound of your phone

The THX company has released a miniaturized digital-to-analog converter that will improve the sound of headphones plugged into our mobile devices and computers.

It often happens that even decent headphones plugged into a smartphone do not sound as good as they should. Engineers at THX decided to solve this problem via an Onyx dongle with an integrated digital-to-analog converter (DAC). It is enough to plug it into the audio path between the headphones and the phone to increase the sound quality of our device.

The transducer is adapted to work in four quality modes: standard, high resolution, Direct Stream Digital (DSD) and Master Quality Authenticated (MQA). The latter will work together with services distributing recordings in lossless audio formats, e.g. with Tidal. MQA can be compared to the FILMMAKER mode used in modern high-end TV sets. Its task is to faithfully reproduce how a given song was recorded in a studio or during a concert, to experience music exactly as its creators heard it.

THX Onyx works with computers with Windows 10, macOS, Android devices and iPads equipped with a USB-C connector. Connecting the iPhone adapter is also possible, although it requires the purchase of a Lightning - USB-C adapter.

The manufacturer has priced the gadget at 210 € and we will buy it both on the THX website and through the Razer website. The cooperation of both companies should not surprise us, after all, THX has long been closely cooperating with Razer in the distribution of gaming headphones, some of which are equipped with a similar transducer plugged into a full-size USB-A port.
