Romalea guttata is from the grasshopper group, it is native to the United States, where it was found in the southeastern and south-central part of the country. This insect has no subspecies, and is known by these 2 names: eastern lubber grasshopper or Florida lubber grasshopper.

El Romalea guttata es del grupo de los saltamontes, es originario de Estados Unidos, donde se encontraba al sureste y centro-sur del país. Este insecto no tiene subespecies, y le es conocido por estos 2 nombres: saltamontes lubber oriental o saltamontes lubber de Florida.

Fun fact: This grasshopper can only be found in the following regions of the United States: North Carolina to Tennessee , in Georgia , Alabama , Mississippi , Louisiana , Arkansas and Texas , and in Florida , Missouri and Arizona. And the funny thing is that I live in Venezuela and this grasshopper was in the garden of my house. And the curious questions of the moment are: How did it come from so far away and what or who brought it from the United States?

Y lo curioso es que yo vivo en Venezuela y este saltamontes estaba en el jardín de mi casa. Y las preguntas curiosas del momento son: ¿Cómo pudo llegar de tan lejos? y ¿Qué o quién lo trajo de Estados Unidos?

I consider this grasshopper to be very peculiar, it belongs to the new family Romaleidae and to the great and interesting tribe Romaleini. Before this grasshopper was called Romalea microptera, then it was changed to Romalea guttata. And this has been its scientific name until now.

Este saltamontes yo lo considero muy peculiar, es de la nueva familia Romaleidae y de la grandiosa e interesante tribu Romaleini. Antes este saltamontes tenía por nombre Romalea microptera luego se le cambió a Romalea guttata. Y este ha sido su nombre científico hasta ahora.

Fun fact: The bright colors of this beautiful grasshopper make predators not want to attack or eat it when they see it. This beautiful Romalea goes through several stages until it reaches adulthood, just like all insects that gradually grow.

Dato curioso: Los colores brillantes de este hermoso saltamontes hace que los depredadores al verlo no quieran atacarlo o comérselo. Este hermoso Romalea pasa por varias fases hasta llegar a la edad adulta, así como todos lo insectos que poco a poco crecen.

When it is in the immature stage or also known as nymph is very small, the whole body of this insect is black with several stripes that can be yellow, orange or red. At this stage the small grasshopper Romalea guttata is wingless.

Romalea guttata lives in fresh weeds where the soil is half moist. Sometimes they live in sewers or ponds because grass and other food is much easier to obtain there.

El Romalea guttata vive en las malezas frescas donde la tierra este medio húmeda. Algunas veces suelen vivir en las alcantarillas o estanques ya que la hierba y otros medios de alimentación se consiguen mucho más fácil en ese lugar.

Curious Fact: As a defense, they shoot a foul-smelling foamy liquid from their thorax when disturbed. This liquid is dark and opaque in color.

Dato Curioso: En modo de defensa vota un líquido espumoso y de olor muy asqueroso el cuál sale de su tórax cuando se molesta. Este líquido es de un color oscuro y opaco.

Last curious fact: It can emit such a loud hissing sound that it scares its predator or other insects around it.
