[ESP-ENG] CATRINA, UNA HISTORIA DETRÁS DE LA MÁSCARA // CATRINA, A STORY BEHIND THE MASK

photo_2021-10-17_16-21-36.jpg

¡Holaaaaaaaaaaaa, mis queridísimos amigos de Build-It

Helloooooo, my dear friends at Build-It!

Once again saying present in the new contest from our friend @jennyzer. They have always seemed to me to be one of the most motivating contests on the platform because it is a clear invitation to preserve our environment through recycling and at the same time it puts your creativity to the test. A few days ago I started the project but due to health problems I had not been able to finish it. This contest is very attractive and despite the fact that in Venezuela the celebration of Halloween is very rare, it is known to all and in some other places they hold small meetings alluding to this day.

For this contest I wanted to participate by making a mask with cardboard boxes and rolls of toilet paper and the protagonist of my mask is Catrina. She, this is a character that represents death on Halloween, although in the beginning these images in the shape of a skull were used in social protest for those poor indigenous people who denied their race and wore elegant outfits to look French or Spanish.

Over time, the catrinas began to be used to write verses on the eve of the Day of the Dead to make fun of both the living and the dead, remembering that we are all going to die.

The image of La Catrina is becoming the quintessential Mexican image about death, it is increasingly common to see it embodied as part of Day of the Dead celebrations throughout the country, it has even gone beyond the two-dimensional image and It has become a reason for the creation of handicrafts, either made of clay or other materials, which depending on the region may vary a little in their clothing and even their famous hat, but which have been called "catrinas" anyway.

While the skull was drying I proceeded to make some flowers to form a headband on the top of the skull.
For this I used the toilet paper rolls and flower molds.
I cut the rolls lengthwise and separated the layers. Then I transferred the flower patterns and cut them out.

I selected 5 shades of paint of the most striking colors I could get and painted the flowers on both sides. I made two types of flowers.

Once the paint was dry, I varnished each glue with school glue to give it shine and at the same time I sprinkled with litmus glitter.

After the drying time, I began to assemble the flowers. For this step I used the glue gun. On the tabs of each part I placed a point of silicone and then joined to close it. And so on until each of the flowers is completed.
Then I made a fold in each petal to shape it.

The next step was to put the flower pieces together. For this step, I placed silicone dots between the pieces and gave it the desired shape.

Once the paint on the skull is dry, I made the strokes and lines to shape the Catrina mask.

As I was making lines, I came up with new ideas and I was creating them. The truth was that he did not have a clear idea of what he would do. So I was doing and painting.

Ready the design of the mask I began to join with silicone the upper cuts of the mask to give it a head shape.

Next I placed the flowers in the shape of a headband. For this I used the silicone gun.

And finally, I glued the fabric tapes on each side of the mask with the glue gun to hold it.

In this way I finish my participation in the contest. Not without first reminding them that recycling is life. We not only save the planet through the collection and classification of waste, but also through the reuse of it and at the same time we create wonderful objects either to beautify some gray space or to give life to fictional characters such as Halloween and my representation of Catrina.
This is all. I was very pleased to be part of this contest. Thanks @jennyzer for creating these great contests. See you next time.
