These days, in the city I live, the rain never seems to stop and spending time indoors is the only pleasant thing to do. My friend Anna is very good at embroidery, she learned self-taught and makes many creations, both for personal taste and on commission. Yesterday Anna decided to teach me some basic techniques to compose my first work with embroidery. We started with one of the simplest designs: the flower bouquet.
The first thing to do is to draw on a cotton canvas, preferably thick and inelastic, the design you want to use as a base. In this case, the composition was already printed on the cotton because I used an old towel made specifically for practicing embroidery.
Next, I inserted the cotton towel firmly between the two wooden discs that hold the fabric taut. The next step was to decide on the colors. Since it was my first time, I preferred not to choose many colors, so as not to get confused. In total, therefore, I used 8 colors.
The techniques that can be adopted to embroider are almost infinite: linear, crossed, tapered, inverted, … It all depends on the imagination of the person who works.
It took me 4 hours to complete the job. I think it's a very long time, but it was probably because it was my first time. Overall, I'm happy with the result! In my opinion it is nice, even if a bit imprecise. Certainly the next times it will be better. I’m very happy to have learned something of this creative technique!

In questi giorni, nella città dove vivo, la pioggia sembra non smettere mai e stare in luoghi chiusi è l’unica cosa piacevole da fare. La mia amica Anna è bravissima con il ricamo, ha imparato da autodidatta e realizza moltissime creazioni, sia per gusto personale che su commissione. L’altra sera Anna ha pensato di insegnarmi alcune tecniche base per comporre il mio primo lavoro con il ricamo. Abbiamo cominciato con uno dei disegni più semplici: il bouquet di fiori.
La prima cosa da fare è tracciare su una tela di cotone, preferibilmente spessa e non elastica, il disegno che si vuole utilizzare come base. In questo caso, la composizione era già stampata sul cotone perché ho usato un vecchio fazzoletto prodotto appositamente per esercitarsi con il ricamo.
Successivamente, ho inserito il fazzoletto di cotone in maniera salda tra i due dischi di legno che mantengono teso il tessuto. Lo step successivo è stato decidere i colori. Dato che era la mia prima volta, ho preferito non scegliere molti colori, per non fare confusione. In totale, quindi, ho utilizzato 8 colori.
Le tecniche che si possono adottate per ricamare sono pressocché infinite: lineari, incrociate, affusolate, invertite, … Dipende tutto dalla fantasia di chi lavora.
Per completare il lavoro ci ho messo 4 ore. Penso che sia un tempo molto lungo, ma probabilmente era perché si trattava della mia prima volta. Nel complesso, sono contenta del risultato! A mio avviso è carino, anche se un po’ impreciso. Sicuramente le prossime volte andrà meglio. Sono molto felice di avere imparato qualcosa di questa tecnica creativa!
