A transgenic animal is any animal whose genome (genetic composition) has been changed (altered) by any means of genetic engineering.

Means of genetic engineering through which transgenic organisms are produced involve the transfer of a gene or genes with the desired character from another species or breed.
Animals produced through these processes are widely used in the laboratory as model in biomedical research to study human and animal diseases and development.

Animals have also been modified genetically to produce human antibodies that are used as therapeutics.
They provide man with the required nutrient and have high productivity.

They are also well adapted to the environment as they tend to resist pest and diseases and withstand the prevailing climatic conditions.
The technique of transgenic animals is dated back to the era of natural selection, introduction and selective breeding of animals to the era of artificial insemination and to the transfer of embryo and manipulation of ovaries (eggs) of animals.
