This is What a Florida Hurricane Looks Like 😳

Coming from desert-dry Egypt, I’m not used to the wet lashings of the sub-tropics & hurricanes are intense.

So much so, that our apartment on the 10th floor condo building was actually swaying & successive tornado 🌪 warnings kept me sheltering in the closet.

What’s more, the local airport was shut down and in nearby Miami, a friend told me that not only were the streets flooded, but there fish 🐠 swimming in them.

Surreal…

The sound of the howling winds, as I huddled inside our apartment, was truly humbling — a cross between a passing train and a giant wolf banging against the balcony shutters trying to get in.

Mercifully, I was not harmed in my first hurricane 🌀 (alone) in South Florida, but I did develop a deeper appreciation for how mighty, awesome and devastatingly beautiful nature can be…

Beauty that 'hath terror in it'...

This is how epic poet John Milton describes the Sublime. Emboldened by the company of brave souls in my building, I ventured outside to experience the Hurricane:

And to think we had it comparatively easy - away from eye of the storm! Around 4 million without power in Florida..
It was a minor miracle to still have electricity, when neighboring buildings and streets are without...

Tornado hit airport by our home and, during the day, house swaying from time to time. Feels like I'm out at sea, with howling winds and crashing rain.

Makes one think that humans are like insects on the back of a sleeping giant. Once the giant awakens and stirs, we don’t stand a chance!

Stay safe out there, and look for the rainbow at the end of the thunder storm…

Phew What a difference a day makes!

Cracking shutters open the day after the storm to let the Light in - DeLight! - and the fright out... Shoo!

Neighbor swung by, early morning & we went off to survey building and neighborhood: draining tennis court, which looked more like a pool, collecting wooden fence blown away from the actual pool, and searching nearby streets for pieces of an air conditioner that flew off the roof 😳
