Después de cincuenta años, llegó el momento, todo cambia, su vida tiene el sentido de la continuidad en este planeta y para que esto suceda debe morir. ¿Pero realmente que es la muerte? Es perpetuarse, es dar vida a otros individuos que serán muy parecidos a ella. Millones de pequeñas flores producirán los frutos. En la semilla, una planta en miniatura, el embrión, tendrá la oportunidad de desarrollarse y continuar el ciclo de la vida.
After fifty years, the time has come, everything changes, her life has the meaning of continuity on this planet and for this to happen she must die. But what is death really? It is perpetuating itself, it is giving life to other individuals that will be very similar to it. Millions of little flowers will produce the fruits. In the seed, a miniature plant, the embryo, will have the opportunity to develop and continue the cycle of life.
Hace unos días escribí una publicación sobre el Jardín Botánico de Caracas . Allí habita una palma que no es originaria de América, sino que crece de manera natural en el sudeste asiático y a la cual se le da el nombre de palma de Ceilán, de donde es originaria. En ese momento estaba comenzando su floración y era una atracción para los visitantes del jardín, que preguntaban a los guías detalles sobre esta palma.
A few days ago I wrote a post about the Botanical Garden of Caracas. There inhabits a palm that is not native to America, but grows naturally in Southeast Asia and which is given the name of Ceylon palm, where it originated. At that time it was beginning to flower and was an attraction for visitors to the garden, who asked the guides for details about this palm.
El nombre científico de esta planta es Corypha umbraculifera y su característica más resaltante es su gran floración, la más grande entre las plantas. Pero esa enorme energía que necesita utilizar para este proceso, produce su muerte y es por esto que la palma de Ceilán solo florece una vez durante toda su vida y esto ocurre cada 50, 60 años o quizás más.
The scientific name of this plant is Corypha umbraculifera and its most outstanding characteristic is its great flowering, the largest among plants. But the enormous energy that it needs to use for this process, produces its death and that is why the Ceylon palm only flowers once during its entire life and this happens every 50, 60 years or maybe more.
Pero como la naturaleza es muy sabia, deja una gran cantidad de frutos y con ellos las semillas para asegurar la continuidad de la especie. Ella no necesita de otro individuo para hacerlo, porque en su inflorescencia tiene ambos sexos, que se combinan para iniciar la reproducción.
But as nature is very wise, she leaves a large amount of fruits and with them the seeds to ensure the continuity of the species. It does not need another individual to do so, because in its inflorescence it has both sexes, which combine to initiate reproduction.
Ahora se encuentra en plena floración, su inflorescencia terminal formada en un proceso que llevó meses de cambios fisiológicos, culminará cuando los frutos se hayan desarrollado y las semillas estén aptas para dar origen a una nueva planta. Y mientras esto sucede sus hojas comenzarán a secarse y ya no habrá posibilidad de formar nuevas hojas, porque todo lo que se produce durante la fotosíntesis debe mantener la floración y la fructificación.
Now it is in full bloom, its terminal inflorescence formed in a process that took months of physiological changes, will culminate when the fruits have developed and the seeds are ready to give rise to a new plant. And while this is happening, its leaves will begin to dry and there will no longer be any possibility of forming new leaves, because everything that is produced during photosynthesis must maintain flowering and then fruiting.
Los trabajadores del Jardín Botánico de Caracas, deben prepararse para ayudar a que este esfuerzo de la Palma de Ceilán, pueda llegar a su objetivo final y es la perpetuación de la especie. Recoger los frutos y sembrar las semillas y compartirlos con otras regiones del mundo, para que esta hermosa planta permanezca en el planeta.
The workers of the Botanical Garden of Caracas must prepare themselves to help this effort of the Ceylon Palm to reach its final objective, which is the perpetuation of the species. Sow the fruits and share them with other regions of the world, so that this beautiful plant remains on the planet.
