Walking in the garden, among the grass, under the inclement sun that in the midday hours warmed the surface of the leaves, I noticed a small insect that was probably looking for food.
As I approached it stood still as if observing me and I could see the details of its body and photograph it. But then it quickly hid under the leaf. It was a praying mantis or as we say in my country a blowgun.
It is the first time I observed a mantis of this color. They mimic the color of the leaves where they look for their prey and are usually green or brown.This beauty is golden yellow in color.

When I was a child I liked them to ride on my hand and put my finger on them asking them to raise their legs and they would do it in an instinctive reaction. They were light brown twig-like mantises.
At that time I did not know that this insect that I saw so calm and harmless is a great predator. I learned that later. Just as there are insects that feed on the nectar of flowers such as bees and butterflies, there are also insects that feed on the nectar of flowers.There are others, such as the Mantis, that feed on insects and other small animals. They are all part of the wonderful balance of nature.

Las mantis son insectos carnivoros y muy hábiles cazadoras y su cuerpo esta adaptado para esa función tan importante para sobrevivir. Sus grandes ojos le dan una gran visión, sus patas delanteras fuertes y hábiles para atrapar los insectos y otros animales con los que se alimenta, y allí los devora con sus poderosas mandíbulas.
Cuando levanta sus patas delanteras pareciera que estuviera orando y esta es la razón por la que se llama Mantis religiosa.
Cuando yo era una niña me gustaba que se montaran en mi mano y acercarle el dedo pidiendo que levantara sus patitas y ella lo hacía en una reacción instintiva. Eran unas mantis de color marrón claro parecidas a unas ramitas.
En ese momento no sabia que ese insecto que yo veía tan tranquilo e inofensivo es un gran depredador. Eso lo aprendi despues. Así como hay insectos que se alimentan del néctar de las flores como las abejas y las mariposas existen otros como la Mantis que se alimentan de insectos. Todos forman parte del maravilloso equilibrio de la naturaleza.
