Nature is a vast universe of gifts to human beings. In it, we can find plants, skies, seas, mountains, fruits and of course, animals. All with their wonderful gifts of giving us something without asking anything in return.
In the backyard of my home, I usually enjoy a lot of this generous nature. There are some fruit trees, in which species of birds made their home, and from there they delight me with their song every morning and also at the end of the afternoon, I guess before going to rest.
It is nice to enjoy their singing and when I go down to the yard to take care of Trueno José (my little dog), to watch them fly and appreciate their different characteristics. There are big and small pigeons; cristofuè, hummingbirds and even a big one called a sparrowhawk. I love to enjoy that spectacle every day and for that, I love nature and appreciate all its life forms.
Among those life forms, there are frogs. A little animal that although ugly, is very useful's chain of life. In my backyard, I found one near the tank where we deposit water at home. In my city, there are many problems of water shortage and I have to fill the tank with the hose on the days that water arrives (almost always once a week).
On one of those filling days, I found it. I honestly can't tell you what kind it is or what its species is called. This publication does not pretend to be anything technical or scientific, but rather to tell you about this finding and show you the pictures I managed to take of it.
La naturaleza es un universo amplio de regalos al ser humano. En ella podemos encontrar plantas, cielos, mares, montañas, frutos y por supuesto, animales. Todos con sus dones maravillosos de regalarnos algo sin pedirnos nada a cambio.
En el patio de mi hogar suelo disfrutar mucho de parte de esta naturaleza generosa. Existen algunos árboles frutales, en los que especies de pajaritos hicieron su hogar, y desde allí me deleitan con su canto cada mañana y también al finalizar la tarde, supongo que antes de irse a descansar.
Es lindo disfrutar de su canto y cuando bajo al patio a atender a Trueno José (mi perrito), verlos volar y apreciar sus diferentes características. Hay palomas grandes y pequeñas; cristofués, colibríes y hasta uno grande llamado gavilán. Me encanta disfrutar de ese espectáculo cada día y por eso, amo la naturaleza y agradezco todas sus formas de vida.
Entre esas formas de vida, existen las ranas. Un animalito que si bien es feo en su aspecto, es muy útil en la cadena de vida de la naturaleza. En mi patio me encontré una cerca del tanque donde depositamos el agua en casa. En mi ciudad, existen muchos problemas de escasez del vital líquido y, me toca llenar el tanque con la manguera, los días que llega el agua (casi siempre es una vez a la semana).
En uno de esos días de llenado, la encontré. Honestamente no les puedo decir que clase es ni como se llama su especie. Esta publicación no pretende ser nada técnico o científico, sino más bien contarles acerca de ese hallazgo y mostrarles las fotografías que logré tomarle.
I confess that at first when I came across it, I was a little scared, but after seeing how calm it was, I approached it and took some pictures for you. Frogs are amphibious animals because they can be on land as well as in water. And I believe it because I have seen them in some places like puddles or near a river.
This little frog jumped from the sides of the tank and after the scare, it gave me (coward me), I managed to take some pictures of it. On top of the tank, she stayed still, as you can admire her. Then in one of my carelessness, she made a very long jump from the tank to the cement floor. Since the cement is gray, she had a kind of camouflage because I could hardly see her. After all, it was the same color as the cement where she was after her masterful jump (a considerable height from the top of the tank).
Perhaps she felt threatened by me and of course, I approached her cautiously, but really, I would never have done her any harm. These little animals play an important role in the functioning of ecosystems because, as they feed on some insects, they serve as a means of insect control so that insects do not run away in terms of quantity in existence and may represent a danger to become harmful pests.
They can also warn about natural dangers or environmental conditions, as in the case of frogs that begin to sing when they sense the arrival of rain or after it has passed. It's great to hear them croaking after those downpours, especially in the evenings here in my backyard when the rain ends.
Frogs are delicate-skinned, unlike toads, which I find ugly and disgusting, with more ordinary and wrinkled skin (I saw one in the yard these days, too). To tell the truth, I am a little afraid of the latter.
Confieso que en principio cuando me la topé, tuve algo de miedito, pero luego a ver lo tranquila que era, me acerqué y tomé unas fotografías para ustedes. Las ranas son animales anfibios porque pueden estar tanto en la tierra como en el agua. Y si lo creo porque las he visto en algunos lugares como charcos o cerca de algún río.
Esta ranita saltó de los lados del tanque y después del susto que me dio (cobarde yo), logré tomarle algunas fotos. Encima del tanque se quedaba quietecita, como pueden admirarla. Luego en uno de mis descuidos, dio un salto larguísimo desde el tanque hasta el piso de cemento. Como el cemento es gris, ella tenía una especie de camuflaje pues, casi no podía verla porque era del mismo color del cemento donde se encontraba después de su salto magistral (una altura considerable desde la parte superior del tanque).
Quizás se sintió amenazada por mí y por supuesto, yo me acercaba con cautela, pero realmente, jamás le hubiera hecho algún daño. Estos animalitos cumplen un papel importante en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas pues, como se alimentan de algunos insectos, sirven como medio de control de los mismos para que estos no se desbanden en cuanto a cantidad en existencia y puedan representar un peligro que se convierta en plagas dañinas.
También pueden advertir acerca de peligros naturales o condiciones del medio ambiente, como es el caso de las ranas que comienzan a cantar cuando presienten la llegada de la lluvia o después que esta ha pasado. Es estupendo escucharlas croar después de aquellos aguaceros, sobre todo en las noches aquí en mi patio cuando termina de llover.
Las ranas son de piel delicada, al contrario de los sapos que, a mi parecer, me parecen realmente feos y repugnantes, de piel más ordinaria y arrugada (en estos días vi a uno en el patio también). A decir verdad, a estos últimos, les tengo un poco de temor.

Frogs are not one of my favorite animals. I have always been somewhat afraid of them. However, I can't help but recognize their great role and how useful they are for life and maintaining balance in ecosystems.
After taking a few pictures, my little friend disappeared, I presume to hide to continue living in the yard or perhaps to climb into the water tank where I found her.
I did not get to elucidate what this species of frog was and of course, as I said at the beginning, this is not a scientific publication or anything like it, although at times it may seem like it. It is rather a sign of respect and affection for nature. That so generous and that every day, is beaten and mistreated by many human beings without conscience.

Las ranas no son de mis animales favoritos. En realidad, siempre les he tenido algo de temor. Sin embargo, no puedo dejar de reconocer su gran papel y lo útiles que son para la vida y el mantenimiento del equilibrio en los ecosistemas.
Luego de lograr algunas fotografías, mi amiguita desapareció, presumo que a esconderse para seguir habitando el patio o quizás subirse en el tanque de agua donde la encontré.
No llegué a dilucidar cuál era esta especie de rana y por supuesto, como dije al principio, este no es una publicación de corte científico ni nada que se le parezca, aunque en momentos les parezca. Es más bien una muestra de respeto y cariño a la naturaleza. Esa tan generosa y que cada día, es golpeada y maltratada por muchos seres humanos sin conciencia.

Let's keep the balance and not damage the environment and its inhabitants, each one of them has a useful and important role in the ecosystem. Nature depends on us and it also depends on us to continue to exist as such and thus be able to leave a better world to inhabit to our future generations.

Mantengamos el equilibrio y no dañemos el ambiente y sus habitantes que, cada uno de seguro, tiene un papel de utilidad e importancia, dentro del ecosistema. La naturaleza depende de nosotros y de nosotros también depende que siga existiendo como tal y así poder dejarle un mejor mundo para habitar a nuestras futuras generaciones.
