I am fortunate to live in a place where there are many varied and beautiful plants, trees and flowers. With the confinement due to the pandemic, that was a blessing because I could go down every day with my little daughter to tour the gardens, walk for a long time among the colorful flowers and lush gardens.
On each walk my daughter plays and observes carefully, touches the textures, recognizes the colors and smells the flowers. He always asks me the name of the plants or flowers, many times I know them and I can answer his questions, but other times I have to investigate to be able to explain properly, sometimes he asks me what a specific flower smells like and he puts it more hard.
The photographs that I share with you on this occasion are of a small tree that has really beautiful flowers, with an extremely wonderful perfume. Its common name is franchipan, frangipani, cacalosúchil wallflower, wallflower, suche or Indian Jasmine, in Venezuela it is known as poppy or atapaima. This small tree or shrub is a species of the Plumeria genus that is native to Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela and commonly cultivated in the tropics of our beautiful and perfect planet.
Its branches are scarce, its crown is quite open and a little irregular. The leaves are a very bright green. Its beautiful flowers have white petals with a pale yellow center, these can be yellow, in various shades of pink or purple, they can also be seen combined with up to three colors as you can see in some of the photos I captured. They are very fragrant, their smell can be felt from a long distance, my daughter and I are really fascinated by them. The fruits are elongated, pendulous pods that can vary in color from yellowish green to orange and contain many winged seeds.
A fact that I found very interesting is that for Buddhists and Mohammedans it is a symbol of immortality due to its extraordinary power in the production of leaves and flowers. They plant them in abundance very close to the temples and cemeteries and they tend to cover the graves every day with flowers freshly cut from the trees. Also practitioners of Hinduism use flowers to make offerings to their gods or to make floral carpets at the entrance of sacred places, for all these reasons it is also known by the name of the Temple Tree.

Las fotografías que comparto con ustedes en esta oportunidad son de un árbol pequeño que tiene unas flores realmente preciosas, con un perfume sumamente maravilloso. Su nombre común es franchipán, frangipani, cacalosúchil alhelí, alhelí cimarrón, suche o Jazmín indio, en Venezuela se le conoce como amapola o atapaima. Este árbol pequeño o arbusto es una especie del género Plumeria que es nativa de México, América Central y Venezuela y comúnmente cultivada las zonas tropicales de nuestro bello y perfecto planeta.
Sus ramas son escasas, su copa es bastante abierta y un poco irregular. Las hojas son de un verde muy brillante. Sus bellísimas flores tienen pétalos blancos con el centro amarillo pálido, estas pueden ser amarillas, en varios tonos de rosa o púrpura, se pueden ver también combinadas con hasta tres colores como pueden ver en algunas de las fotos que capturé. Son muy fragantes, su olor puede sentirse desde una larga distancia, a mi hija y a mi realmente nos fascina. Los frutos son vainas alargadas pendulares, de color que puede variar entre verde amarillentas a anaranjadas y contienen muchas semillas aladas.
Un dato que me pareció muy interesante es que para los budistas y los mahometanos es un símbolo de inmortalidad por su extraordinario poder en la producción de hojas y flores. Las siembran con abundancia muy cerca de los templos y de los cementerios y acostumbran a cubrir las tumbas todos los días con flores recién cortadas de los árboles. También los practicantes del hinduismo usan las flores para realizar ofrendas sus dioses o para hacer alfombras florales hacía la entrada de los lugares sagrados, por todas estas razones también se le conoce por el nombre de Árbol del templo.
