Turtles rescued due to extreme cold in Texas🐢❄️

A journalistic note published in BioGuia

A surprise polar wave storm has brought extremely low temperatures to some cities, this is considered by many to be the coldest storm of winter.

This phenomenon has surprised both us and some animals, such as turtles, who have to withstand temperatures down to -25 ° Celsius below zero, making them go so cold that they have lost the ability to swim or feed, in addition to this, it is generating important failures in the electrical networks.

Therefore, groups of volunteers and veterinary personnel have participated in the rescue of almost 4,000 specimens of sea turtles in the waters of Laguna Madre Bay and the coastline of the municipality of South Padre Island (southern Texas, very close to the border with Mexico).

The general condition of the turtles

Many of the animals rescued from the coast of Texas even showed severe hypothermia and many others were paralyzed due to the cold, it seems as if they had frozen, this is the report presented by members of Sea Turtle Inc in South Padre Island.

"It is an unprecedented event," said Wendy Knight, executive director of the Sea Turtle Inc conservation and research center, which has been leading the effort. Knight said that normally only 100 to 500 turtles make it to the beaches of South Texas each boreal winter. This is alarming.

A video recorded by Ed Caum, executive director of the South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, shows volunteers trying to help the turtles by placing them on carts, many more specimens can be seen on the floor.

Caum said the reptiles were "stunned by the cold," a condition in which cold-blooded animals suddenly exhibit hypothermic reactions such as lethargy and inability to move when the temperature in the surrounding environment drops as extreme as is.

Some people even carried many of these specimens in their personal vehicles, the conditions in which they were found were very notorious.

They are not the only victims

As we said before, human beings also have consequences for such extreme cold. At least 23 people have died from the winter storm that has frozen the southern and central United States.

Additionally, more than a dozen dogs were rescued from the cold near Houston, while one was found dead. A chimpanzee, several lemurs and monkeys, and many tropical birds died at an animal sanctuary near San Antonio after the facility lost power due to this phenomenon.
