Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary

According to oral traditions, the name Fiema means “Full House”. The history and origin of the community as far as the Chief, Nana Sarfo Kantanka II can recall and was told by his fathers and grandfathers is as follows: The Fiema community has been in existence over two hundred years now.

One of their great grandfather by name Fobiri was a prince in the royal palace of the Asante Kokofu Kingdom. Fobiri was committing incest with his own sister, the princess, by name Donsaa. Since it was a taboo in the Asante Kingdom to commit incest, both of them were banished from the Asante kingdom and they made their way to the land of Nkoranza. The Nkoranza king gave them a place to settle but Fobiri turned to be a robber and a murderer who used to rob and kill traders moving from the northern part of Ghana to Kumasi through Nkoranza to trade.

In order to let him stop the robbing and killing, the king of Nkoranza made him the priest of one of the idols (called “abudwo”) in his domain which was situated at Bodom (a community closer to Fiema). It is said that the “abudwo” hates shedding of blood and so none of his priests is supposed to do so. Fobiri then stopped being a robber and murderer when he accepted to be the priest of abudwo. The Nkoranza chief then instructed the king of Boabeng to give Fobiri a place on his land to settle down. He added that the place should not be far from Boabeng so that he can monitor the activities of Fobiri.

The Boabeng king gave Fobiri the present day Fiema. They gave the name Fiema because Fobiri`s decendants married themselves and gave birth to fill their house (thus the name Fiema meaning full house).

There is a nationally recognized tourist site at Fiema which bears the name “Boabeng-Fiema monkey sanctuary”. This sanctuary has been in existence since the nineteenth century and has been a major recreation site for the community members and also people from far and near.
