Lobularia Maritima o Alyssum Maritimum

Bienvenidos Queridos Amantes de la Fotografía

Welcome Dear Photography Lovers

It is always great to be with you sharing my passion, as I have told you in other occasions, the quarantine issue limits me a lot to be able to take my pictures, since I don't go out much. And as many of you already know, despite my extreme care, I contracted the covid-19 virus while I was taking care of my mother in the hospital. Also many know that I became ill and was hospitalized for 19 days. All this situation, lead me to increase even more the security measures, because of all the after-effects of the disease, so now I go out of the house much less.

But, the wonders of nature are always there, just waiting for us to become aware of their existence. So, looking on the bright side, quarantine has helped me to sharpen my senses and see beyond the obvious. I have become more observant and detailed about the world around me, allowing me to discover a tiny world full of beautiful surprises.

Such is the case of the tiny but beautiful little flowers that I am sharing with you today, which is the inflorescence of a plant commonly known as Dulce Alison or Dulce Alyssum. Although I must emphasize, that in spite of its name, it is a survivor, when I came across it it was growing in one of the slots of the drainage gutter of the street in front of my house. As you can read, it is a very resistant plant and grows almost anywhere, which has made it endemic in the area where I live.

An interesting detail of this species, is that the name Alyssum conserves it of the genus where previously it had been classified, (genus: Alyssum). At present, as its official name indicates, it is classified within the genus Lobularias, whose word comes from Greek and means "small pod", referring to its small fruits. On the other hand, when we talk about the name of this species (Maritima), this is due to its predilection for coastal ecosystems.

As the climate of my city is warm all year round, this plant is perennial and thanks to its resistance and adaptability to even very poor substrates, such as the grooves of the sidewalks, it has become endemic. Wherever you turn you can see its branched stems that do not exceed 30 cm, crowned by its clusters of tiny inflorescences. Its proliferation is also due to its multiple fruits in the form of elongated and hairy pods, which contain two seeds that are scattered with the help of the wind.

If we are attentive, we will be able to enjoy these tiny bouquets of delicate flowers, but to admire them well, they must be looked at from very close. This is because each flower measures at most 5 millimeters, they are very tiny, aren't they? Besides, when we get closer we can perceive their sweet aroma like honey, and the best thing is that, at least in the city where I live, we can see them all year long. Now, regarding the shades in which we can find these delicate flowers, they come in a wide range of colors, from white, pink, yellow, lilac, violet and red.

As for their habitat, these species originate from the Canary Islands, Cabe Verde and Madeira, although they have a predilection for inhabiting the sandy areas of beaches and dunes, you can find them scattered around the world. Due to their resistance to heat and poor soils, they can adapt and survive in almost any place, it is possible to see them developing in places as inhospitable as the cracks of the walls, lands with poor substrates. However, in some parts of the world as well, they can be found in gardens and fertile lands. In short, these nice plants can adapt to almost any place, which is why they have become endemic in some places.
