I remember that when I was a kid we used to have lots of different Irises growing around the garden in various colours. Then some of the just died and were replaced by other flowers.
Now we have the ones on the photos here and a yellow one that I didn't manage to photograph.
The ones we have are quite common I would say and nothing fancy. But there is so many different types and hybrids now! With huge flowers and ruffles petals.
The flowers don't last very long, but the flower stem can produce buds for a while and they open one after another. So the overall blooming time last a few weeks.
The petals on those are extremely delicate. They bruise and crease easily. And the one day they are all curl up and look like pile of mush. Blooming is done.
This navy blue is probably my favorite. It is much smaller than the first, or the last one here. But the colour and the pattern on the petals is amazing! The leaves on this are also much thinner and more flexible and when there is no flowers they look like some large ornamental grass.
They look best when planted in a large clump. Multiple dark blower pop from between the leaves in spring.
Propagation is quite easy - they grow thick rhizomes that can be easily divided and treated as separate plants.
Lastly a brown one that smells like peppery perfumes. The buds on those are pretty amazing as they look almost completely black. Then they open those warm brown blooms.
