Bienvenidos a mi blog 2 idiomas nuevo.png

The sloth or sloth is a very unique animal, which has been given the label of lazy for its slowness to move, when its metabolism is responsible for it, it turns out that this funny animal is important for nature and ecosystems in which it lives, It turns out that this funny animal is important for nature and the ecosystems in which it lives, mainly the Amazon and although it may not seem so, they are strongly threatened because many times mothers are attacked in search of their offspring with the purpose of selling them as pets, in order to raise awareness of the importance and characteristics of these animals and thus prevent them from continuing to attack, since 2010 every third Saturday of October is celebrated the International Day of the Sloth.

Sloths are quiet and quite submissive animals, besides looking very cute as I pointed out in the previous paragraph, at some point I presume that someone saw them as a likely pet and there poachers began to snatch the young mothers, cutting their nails and subduing them to get them used to those who compare them to have them as pets in their homes, but what we humans often do not keep in mind is that sloths, like many other wildlife animals that we want to have as pets, need their habitat to have a full life.

Many times we believe that wildlife needs its habitat and it is very true, but habitats also need the animals that live in them, since they fulfill a function within those ecosystems. So sloths, like any other animal, fulfill a function within their habitat, and now we will talk a little about these cute animals.

The first thing to note is that the slowness of the sloth is due to its low metabolism, which only allows them to move approximately 37. 4904 m per day, besides this slow metabolism, is that it allows the growth of algae that are born in his body named Trichophilus, this algae only grows in the fur of the sloths and helps them to camouflage, On the other hand, they have a low temperature and spend most of their life in the trees hiding camouflaged from predators, they are solitary and of the 24 hours of the day the sloth spends 15 hours sleeping, which leaves only 9 hours for the rest of their activities and an important fact they need healthy forests for their survival.

Types of sloths:

There are two main species of sloth, identified by whether they have two or three claws on their front legs. The two species are quite similar in appearance, with rounded heads, sad-looking eyes, tiny ears, and stubby tails.

Two-toed sloths

Two-toed sloths are slightly larger and tend to spend more time hanging upside down than their three-toed cousins, which often sit upright in the fork of a tree branch.

Three-toed sloths

Three-toed sloths have facial coloration that makes them look like they are always smiling. They also have two extra vertebrae in their neck that allow them to turn their heads almost completely.

Within these two types of sloths there are 6 species as follows:

  • Pygmy three-toed sloth (Bradypus pygmaeus).
  • Maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus)
  • Pale-throated sloth (Bradypus tridactylus)
  • Brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus)
  • Linnaean two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus)
  • Hoffman's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni)

Two-toed sloths tend to hang horizontally from branches, while three-toed sloths usually sit in the forks of trees.

On the other hand, sloths have a pregnancy period of six months and give birth to a baby a year, these sloths stay clinging to their mother's belly for about six months, this period with their mother is extremely important as it helps the offspring to learn and develop, after detaching from her womb, they last with her about two to four years depending on the species or type, so it is fatal when these babies are detached from their mother to be sold as pets.

Now, the importance of the sloth lies in the fact that it is a fundamental member of the Amazon rainforest, since it is the only one with a symbiotic relationship with Trichophilus algae, which as already mentioned is only found in sloths and nowhere else.

n summary, this is a species of which very little is known, I could extend a lot talking about their habitat and feeding, but the purpose of this publication is that people understand and internalize, the damage they do to nature by buying from hunters and wildlife sellers, specimens of sloths or any other species, the only way to end definitively with this terrible practice, is to end the market and that will only happen the day they run out of buyers. Now I say goodbye, wishing you have learned a little more of this unique species and how important it is to remain in their habitat, on the other hand if this publication has been to your liking please leave me a comment.
