📷 Church of Elijah the Prophet at Dawn

The Church of Elijah the Prophet is located in Suzdal, Vladimir region, Russia. It stands in the bend of the Kamenka River, which flows through the town. Elias Church now is a stone one, it was built in 1744 in place of a wooden one.

In the 18th century, a small winter church was located next to the Elias Church — the Church of St. John the Theologian. At the beginning of the 20th century, that winter church, as well as the refectory and bell tower of the Elias Church were destroyed. The project for the restoration of the Elias Church was developed in the 1970s, but it was realized at the beginning of the 21st century: the bell tower and the refectory were fully restored only in 2010.

Small note. I'm not an expert in church building, especially in different countries and in different times, so I'll explain about the winter church — I don't know how widespread this was. The winter church was usually a small, but heated church, in which worship services could be performed in the winter season, in contrast to the large main churches — summer ones, which in this case was the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Since the climate in Russia in winter is, as a rule, rather harsh, earlier such a neighborhood of two churches happened rather often.

It's better to watch the photo in high resolution.
