If there is a historical fact that marks the decline of Gran Colombia around 1828, this is it. It is that in the city of Bogota there was a movement to end the life of Simon Bolivar, who at the time was the dictator of the countries that made it up.
I invite you to read in these lines a story of that fateful, fortuitous and daring night in the palace of San Carlos, home of Simon Bolivar and his eternal lover Manuelita Saenz.

Context

It was the year 1828, when the liberator's dream was threatened by the division in thought and mandate that existed between him and Francisco de Paula Santander (vice president of Gran Colombia).
A few years earlier, in 1821, the liberator's dream of building a republic materialized, which would be called Gran Colombia and was supported under the constitution drafted at the congress of Cucuta where Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Venezuela, were united in what became known as the Viceroyalty of New Granada.
This union was a product of the battles and wars that freed hundreds and thousands of soldiers throughout our lands, to definitely remove the oppression and colonialism that was lived by the Spaniards who lived in these spaces, owning them and violating all the rights of those born here.
However, with the passage of those post-independence years, it was very difficult to differentiate the mandates of the crown or how the new independence government was carried out; thanks to the constitution drafted, there were autonomous provinces, but governed by military who were notorious in the independence struggles. This situation, somewhat diverted the genesis of achieving freedom, since the nascent governments were despot, authoritarian, abusive and were far from defending the rights of all citizens.

In addition to this, Francisco Santander was in charge of the vice presidency of the Great Republic. During his government he had eliminated some tariffs on coffee and cocoa, included civilians in his cabinet, promoted education and administered everything related to public finance; it is at this point where one of the main drawbacks between Santander and Bolivar arises because, the first bet on a more federalist government and the second, wanted to continue using the few resources obtained in the wars of independence in order to continue creating authoritarian and life-long governments.

All this context was generating divisions within the two characters to the point that on June 13, 1828, they granted the title of dictator to Simón Bolívar, removing Santander from the vice presidency.
This situation, generated great discomfort in social sectors adept to Santander, because it meant a threat against all the principles expressed in the constitution and the various efforts that had made the vice president in his government.

With strong threats of uprising, insurrections, dissatisfied governments and wanting to separate from this republic that did not generate benefits for them, a series of young republicans, most of them notable writers, gathered in order to remove Bolivar from power.

According to the writing of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Colombia, entitled "La noche Septembrina" tells the following:

.

Among the main members we find the following characters: Ramón N. Guerra, Mariano Escovar, Juan Nepomuceno Vargas, Wenceslao Zuláibar, Luís Vargas Tejada, Florentino González, and Doctor Juan Francisco Arganil. Pedro Carujo, Agustín Horment, Ezequiel Rojas, Mariano Ospina Rodríguez, Rudesindo Silva, Benedicto Triana, Joaquín Acebedo, José Ignacio López, Juan Hinestrosa, Rafael Mendoza, Teodoro Galindo, Emigdio Briceño, Pedro Celestino Azuero and Juan Miguel Acebedo joined this first group.
Of all those mentioned so far, some figures stand out: the foreigners Agustín Horment and Juan Francisco Arganil, the first a French citizen, born in Navarren, who quickly became involved in local politics, opposing the figure of Bolívar. The second, Arganil, a man over 70 years old and of French nationality, who was suspected of being an apostate and a Freemason."(Page 5)
.

His ideas supported them in that Bolivar wanted to resemble Julius Caesar and this limited his aspirations to become a free and sovereign republic, stripped of weapons and all the vestiges left over from the war.

Nefanda Nocte Septembrina

On September 25, 1828, Bolivar was in the palace of San Carlos that served as the presidential house, for its strategic location near the central square of Bogota and a few blocks from his hacienda at the entrance to Monserrate hill. It was an ordinary night, accompanied by his eternal lover Manuelita, who had already left her husband and was residing full time with him, when this group of subversives decided to carry out the plan.
A series of fortuitous and unexpected cases made them take such a hasty decision when they thought they had discovered their plans to assassinate the liberator. Among the first fortuitous case is Benedicto Triana (captain), who after a drunkenness, shouted to some soldiers that when the tyrant falls all would be condemned; for this fact they imprisoned him and this generated desperation among the young men in their twenties, who decided to form three groups to overthrow Bolivar's government.
One group goes to the palace of San Carlos, another group to attack the Vargas Battalion and a last front, with the task of assassinating Colonel Whitle, commander of the Vargas Battalion and faithful follower of Bolivar.

At the Palace of San Carlos, at 10:30 p. m. everything is developing with "the normality" of being each one lying down, when they feel that a group of people burst in under the command of commander Pedro Carujo, and seconded by Azuero, Joaquín and Miguel Acebedo, González, Zuláibar, Horment, López and Ospina. Bolivar, feeling the roar and finding himself in his bedroom, takes his sword and pistol. At this point, Manuelita persuades him and tells him to escape through the window.

.
Put in context, a city like Bogota cold and rainy, without clothes to match and Bolivar already coming ill from his lung condition, measuring less than 1.68 cm and the window more than two meters, after making sure that there was no one outside,

He jumped out of the window!

Heading in an unknown direction to protect his life.

IMG-20180527-WA0103-1.jpg
Window where Bolivar jumped.

IMG-20180527-WA0102-1.jpg
Street N 10 where Bolivar ran.

The executioners of the moment find the room, but Manuelita comes out naked (which was totally inconceivable at the time). The men are stunned without noticing that the window was open and giving a gap of a few seconds for Bolivar to run as far away as possible.
At all this moment, the rebels, after destroying the house and noting that Bolivar was not there, decided to retreat to hide

.
In the same way, the other two fronts failed in their attempts due to these also fortuitous facts: Colonel Padilla (imprisoned in the barracks) did not join the assassination campaign and Coronel Whiltle was not at home that night.

Hours later

Bolivar manages to hide in the Del Carmen Bridge, while all the commotion passes and is accompanied by the confectioner, who hours later advises that everything is calm; the army manages to reestablish itself and in the following hours Bolivar returns to continue governing.

Among his decisions, there were many executions, persecutions, and unjust treatment:

Among the first, the execution of General José Prudencio Padilla for "supposedly helping" the rebels stands out, being proven years later to be innocent.

In the case of Francisco Paula Santander, although his link to the attack was not proven, he was in the first instance condemned to be shot, but then Bolivar spared his life, banishing him from Gran Colombia.

This fact, is recognized as the beginning of the dissolution of Gran Colombia and the liberator's dream of a united America, dissolution that materializes in 1830.
