Hello Hodlers! I think that most football and videogame fans already know Sorare, the global fantasy football game where users can play with officially licensed digital cards.
The platform developed in 2018 is having a huge success, it currently records more than 50,000 users and grows on average by 50% every month in terms of registered users. Many football teams like Bayern München, Paris Saint Germain, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have already signed licensing partnership with Sorare.
How does the game work?
Upon registration, each user receives 10 Sorare cards that represent 10 football players. On Sorare each user is a manager who chose on a weekly basis his own starting line-up made up of 5 players. At the end of the week each football player is assigned a score based on the real-world soccer pitch and the sum of the scores of the 5 line-up players assigns a rank to the coach. The teams that accumulate the best scores at the end of the day are rewarded with new cards, which can be exchanged or sold to other managers.
What is the function of the Ethereum blockchain?
Sorare would not exist without the contribution of the Ethereum Blockchain that distributes and secures the ownership of cards: cards cannot be altered, duplicated, or deleted as each player card is represented as a non-fungible token (NFT) using the ERC-721 token standard on Ethereum.
Thanks to Ethereum blockchain technology, managers can collect Sorare cards with the benefits of provable scarcity: every card has a fixed supply with three levels of scarcity: Unique, Super Rare (10 copies) and Rare (100 copies).
