Bismarckia nobilis es una palmera que pertenece a la familia Arecaceae y es originaria de Madagascar. Es de crecimiento lento, requiere luz solar de parcial a completa, áreas cálidas y húmedas, y puede alcanzar una altura de 18-30 metros con simetría abierta y redonda.

Bismarckia nobilis is a palm belonging to the Arecaceae family and is native to Madagascar. It is slow growing, requires partial to full sunlight, warm and humid areas, and can reach a height of 60-100 feet with open, rounded symmetry.

Esta especie no es tan resistente al daño de las tormentas de viento como la mayoría de las otras especies de palmeras, pero es muy tolerante a la sequía.

This species is not as resistant to windstorm damage as most other palm species, but is very drought tolerant.

Las hojas son gigantescas, de color verde azulado a gris azulado, de textura cerosa. La capa de cera en la hoja le da un aspecto gris-plateado a las grandes hojas palmeadas en forma de abanico que se caen naturalmente a medida que envejecen.

The leaves are gigantic, bluish-green to bluish-gray, waxy in texture. The waxy coating on the leaf gives a silver-gray appearance to the large fan-shaped palmate leaves that naturally droop as they age.

El tronco es liso de color marrón grisáceo, muy recto, marcado con giros en espiral y hendiduras anilladas de las bases de las hojas viejas.

Es una variedad totalmente dioica que tiene plantas masculinas y femeninas separadas. Las inflorescencias masculinas y femeninas de color marrón oscuro se producen en árboles separados. Las plantas femeninas producen inflorescencias de pequeñas flores de color blanco crema, y las femeninas desarrollan frutos de color marrón/cobre.

It is entirely dioecious variety having separate male and female plant. The dark brown male and female inflorescences are produced on separate trees. Female plants produce inflorescences of small creamy-white flowers, and females develop brown/copper colored fruits.

Los frutos se producen en grandes racimos en las plantas femeninas. El fruto es una drupa de color marrón/cobre, ovoide, obtuso bilobulado o trilobulado con una sola semilla.

Se propaga por semilla y el árbol suele crecer de 30 a 60 centímetros por año. Las semillas de Bismarckia nobilis en general requieren mucho tiempo para germinar debido a su largo periodo de latencia y su germinación es lenta y desigual. La dormancia, o período en el ciclo biológico durante el cual están reducidas las funciones metabólicas, es la obstrucción fundamental de la germinación de las semillas viables, en parte, debido a la inmadurez del embrión.

It is propagated by seed and the tree usually grows 1-2 feet per year. Bismarckia nobilis seeds generally require a long time to germinate due to their long dormancy period and their germination is slow and uneven. Dormancy, or the period in the biological cycle during which metabolic functions are reduced, is the fundamental obstruction to germination of viable seeds, partly due to the immaturity of the embryo.

En tal sentido, la imprimación de las semillas, que es una práctica controlada que implica hidratación y ruptura de la dormancia en las semillas, en la que las semillas se empapan previamente en agua o productos químicos hasta el punto en que las actividades metabólicas comienzan, es una técnica que ha sido efectiva empleando ácido giberélico (regulador del crecimiento vegetal que rompe la latencia, fomenta el crecimiento y el desarrollo) e imidacloprid, que aunque es un insecticida, contiene neonicotinoides que ejercen un efecto en la germinación y el crecimiento.

In this regard, seed priming, which is a controlled practice involving hydration and dormancy breaking in seeds, in which seeds are pre-soaked in water or chemicals to the point where metabolic activities begin, is a technique that has been effective using gibberellic acid (a plant growth regulator that breaks dormancy, promotes growth and development) and imidacloprid, which although an insecticide, contains neonicotinoids that exert an effect on germination and growth.

El extracto acuoso de semillas de Bismarckia nobilis se ha utilizado como agente reductor y estabilizador para la síntesis de nanopartículas de plata y las nanopartículas de plata sintetizadas mostraron buena actividad antimicrobiana y un efecto citotóxico significativo en líneas celulares de cáncer de cuello uterino y de pulmón humano.

The aqueous extract of Bismarckia nobilis seeds has been used as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles and the synthesized silver nanoparticles showed good antimicrobial activity and significant cytotoxic effect on human cervical and lung cancer cell lines.

También se ha informado en una investigación realizada con conejos albinos blancos que extractos metanólicos obtenidos de la planta completa, poseen actividades antiespasmódicas, antidiarreicas, relajantes de las vías respiratorias y vasodilatadoras, lo que sugirió la utilidad terapéutica de Bismarckia nobilis en la diarrea, el asma y la hipertensión.

It has also been reported in a research conducted with white albino rabbits that methanolic extracts obtained from the whole plant, possess antispasmodic, antidiarrheal, airway relaxant and vasodilator activities, which suggested the therapeutic utility of Bismarckia nobilis in diarrhea, asthma and hypertension.

Finalmente comentar que el género Bismarckia es monotípico (solo posee una especie) y recibe ese nombre por Otto Von Bismarck, primer canciller alemán en el siglo XIX.
