Sanctuary is a rather strange word - one that has so many uses. Of course, I can't deny that, right now, the first thing that comes to my mind is a bomb sanctuary. And who can blame me, with everything going on in the world? Maybe a little bit too negative, but that's the ugly, negative world we live in right now. It's like we're living in a psychological thriller or science fiction novel. Murder, technology, mutants... No, this is not a summary of X-men.
The very word sanctuary, as I have already said, has many connotations. It doesn't just mean a place - it can be anything.
The sanctuary in religion
No matter how much you have sinned, you will always be forgiven by God. Faith is one of the things I find sanctuary in when I'm down: faith in God, what he has given me, who I am as a person and all the things I have managed to conquer with his help. Even though I don’t have time for him, because I’m constantly working and busy, I know he's there. When I need him the most, he will accept me in his sanctuary. As always.
The sanctuary in art
Many people who have experienced trauma or just want to escape from their everyday life (at least for a little while) find sanctuary in art. Tired of work and family obligations, you may find sanctuary in a good book, movie or hobbies. Each person is different, and he/she finds sanctuary where he/she feels most comfortable and at peace. All these sanctuaries, however, are created by our subconscious. The belief is that, in the given place or hobby, we will find comfort that we don't have in real life. If you think about it, many of the words we know are just terms, created by one's mind and labeled for the given purpose. You can't read these things in a dictionary, Google or Wikipedia. You have to figure them out for yourself because each person sees things differently.
suffer from the past, to long for the future, but to forget the present.
