Gendoren, But Many Call It Kenduri

Source

Each region usually has a different name. However, in standard Indonesian, gendoren is called "kenduri". A kind of ritual to pray for the dead. Also, so that those who are still alive can always be grateful for their lives.

At my place, kenduri events are often held. Every house in my neighborhood always does it. Not an annual event. This activity will be counted from the time a person dies.

Usually, day 40, day, day 100, and day 1000 after someone dies. (I could be wrong about the details). Apart from this, there are other names. But let's just discuss the feast rather than the topic is wide.

Kenduri event is not something sad. Stay cool. Because in this event the people in my village will gather at a house (depending on whose family invites). Then they perform prayers so that the deceased will have the best place in the sight of God.

One person will be their guide. Usually, it is the person who is most respected for his wisdom. It can be older people or people who have better knowledge. He will invite people to read some prayers during this activity. Then someone else will follow it until it's finished.

This feast is not only a way to pray for the dead, but it is also used to share. Because the owner of the house will prepare some food to be distributed on the invitation. Each was given a portion large enough to take home. For their families to eat.

In detail:
People come to the location. They will greet each other with a handshake. Of course, people will wear decent clothes at this event. The hallmark in my area: people will use a skullcap and also a sarong.

While waiting for people to come, they enjoyed the cigarettes that were provided. Omg, I almost forgot about it. This event is only for men because they are considered the head of the household.

After everyone had arrived, a new event began. The leader of the event will give a speech first. Then perform a joint ritual containing prayers: verses from the Qur'an and also hopeful praises. In this case, we usually use Arabic or Javanese (to a certain level).

After the event is fully completed, the owner of the house will provide food that has been wrapped in plastic. Distribute evenly before people go home.

I think this activity is also full of togetherness, good wishes, and delicious food. Do you agree? :)
