Between Two Beautiful Natural Environments ||| LOH Contest #196

What environment do you prefer—mountains or oceans?

I had to do a little bit of compare and contrast about living in either of these two. When it comes to the ocean, water has a special place in my heart. I love a big body of water, its cool breeze, walking barefoot and feeling the fine sands on my feet, the blue vast sky above it when I looked up, learning how to swim, and exploring different vistas of the sea. And oh, what can be better compared to enjoying the beautiful sunsets on the seaside?

Everything about a big water environment is beautiful. Well, except for the part where I am worried about the rising sea level, flooding, erosion, and the possibility of such threatening any property built close to an ocean. If I had my way, I would be spending a lot of my time exploring oceans, having fun, and making a lot of new experiences and lasting memories.

But when it comes to living permanently close to a large body of water, I think I will pass; I would rather just come and leave than stay permanently. Why? Well, maybe I think living in such an environment will come with a lot more challenges than living on a mountainside.

And what do I love about living on a mountainside? My answer to that is a simple one: I love those scenic views when you are watching your surroundings from a high level. What is better than waking up to a beautiful view every single morning? That alone can have such a positive impact on my mental and emotional health.

With the land surrounding a mountainside, I can become self-sufficient by rearing livestock and growing my food crops, sounds amazing and a meaningful way to live, right?

My big sister's house happens to be upstairs and also faces a very big rock, and that is my favorite part of her house. Watching the moving cars and her whole surroundings from upstairs is simply beautiful. Sometimes I even imagine myself having my house built on that rock side opposite her house, and then I could watch those views for as long as I want. So if I have to choose between living in an oceanic or mountainous environment, I will choose a mountainside without hesitation.

I remember a time I visited Zuma Rock in Suleja, a town very close to Abuja here in Nigeria. Going to three years now, the serenity of the environment is just so amazing. I saw houses close to the big rocks, and I kind of thought about how lucky those people are to always wake up to such natural beauty surrounding their homes. This is one place I hope to be able to revisit shortly because when I think about my experience there close to three years ago, I just want to relive those beautiful moments once more.

If I were to live by a large body of water, I would likely have to worry about floods and other challenges one can face in such an environment from time to time, and we know how unpredictable and dangerous that can be. So for that reason, I think a mountainside will be safer for me to live on. Yeah, I would still have to choose a mountainside very close to a good access road for easy mobility. There should be network coverage, and it must be a place with a very minimal history of natural disasters and very little possibility of future natural disasters occurring.
