My Toy Of Many Colours! LOH #196

What was your favorite toy as a child? And why?

There’s a huge variety of toys and activities for children nowadays which keeps increasing by the day but we didn’t have fancy toys back in our days, we were very happy with very simple things. My childhood was awesome and I always declared it, simple but full of delectable memories and I always smile when any prompt brings up those wonderful times.

I lived a simple village life, you see, and as a girl growing up in that rural setting, I actually hadn't much toys to play with because I grew up at a time when we knew nothing much about them except for dolls we popularly referred to as "nwa baby" or " little girlie", nothing elaborate, just plastic dolls which came in different colours and sizes, and to buy as many of those colours as possible was top priority.

I got the first set of these vintage"Barbie" dolls when I was about four. We got them at the vinyl record shop, long gone now, in the middle of our town, by the railroad tracks, they were sold for "toro"(one penny) per piece. I was just so fascinated with the different colours and squeaky sounds it made whenever you squeezed it so hard, it had a "whistle" thing that makes the noise from the head and which can be separated. Anytime I was given the gift of money, I quickly rushed to acquire more colours, one was never satisfied until one had it all. I must have had at least a dozen of them that surrounded me at a time. I would talk to them, scold them, hug them, I also remember bathing them and rubbing them with my body oil and powder until I grew up and got tired of playing with those dolls.... I quickly grew out of the fascination for those when I "grew up" and when a new edition of more realistic dolls became the next thing.

Then some mischievous brothers would puncture their sister's baby doll with the knife or nail anytime they were offended by them, just to get back at them. But in my own case, I really couldn't understand why Grandma's old and naughty dog, "Butu", made my toys miserable by chewing them.

But I didn't use these dolls for long after I had amassed a large collection of them because there were too many activities in the village where I went to live with my Grandma, I think I willingly let Butu play with the last set.😁

These are the Barbie dolls of the later generations, the newer edition of the ‘brunette’ whose hair was black, blonde or fiery red and was a miniature "human". I didn't see myself as a kid anymore when they came in vogue.
