Yesterday was No Bra Day all across the world, a day that is set aside to create Awareness for Breast Cancer every October. Women were encouraged to go braless to create awareness on how to identify the symptoms of breast cancer by conducting self examination.

However, the awareness was intentionally or unintentionally misinterpreted by a lot of thoughtless men and women in the society who used the opportunity to promote, share and post uncensored photos on social media

It is quite unfortunate that if the hash tag #nobraday is searched on social media so many of the results have little or nothing to do with creating awareness for breast cancer. Some are just photographs of half nude women who are topless and putting their nipples on display.

Nevertheless, there are few people who understood the assignment. They ensured that they passed the message the right way by making use of graphics and infographics on the right way to examine the breast for signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

No Bra Day is an annual observance on October 13 on which women are encouraged to go braless as a means to encourage breast cancer awareness. No Bra Day was initially observed on July 9, 2011, but within three years it had moved to the 13th day of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October. Users on social media are encouraged to post using the hashtag #nobraday to promote awareness of breast cancer symptoms and to encourage gender equality. Some users on social media sites also encourage women to post pictures of themselves not wearing a bra. Some women embrace No Bra Day as a political statement while others prefer the comfort of discarding what they view as a restrictive, uncomfortable garment.

Medical experts recommend that regular self examination of the breast should always be carried out because the early symptoms of breast cancers are often felt by the hand.

Some of the notable signs of breast cancers include: change in the shape or size of the breast resulting from swelling or painful feel. Nipple discharge which could be in form of blood, milk or water from a non breastfeeding mother needs urgent attention.
