Children's Day is a day for celebrating children and raising awareness about their rights. It is held annually on May 27th to promote the rights, health and wellbeing of children. The first Children's Day was celebrated in Nigeria in 1950. It was an initiative of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then opposition leader of the Western House of Assembly during the colonial rule. He came up with this initiative after he lost his daughter to Malaria shortly after she was born in 1940. He held the protection of children from abuse by adults and other youths in high esteem
