Memorial Day was known originally as Decoration Day. It was observed first on May 30 1968. It dates back to the aftermath of the Civil War and celebrated on the last Monday of May. It was established to honour the fallen soldiers of the Union Army by decorating their graves. Overtime it evolved into a remembrance day for all military men and women that have sacrificed their lives for the service of their country.

Memorial Day in the United States is observed on the last Monday of May. It is a day for visiting cemeteries and memorials to mourn the military personnel who died in active service. Volunteers will place American flags on the graves of those military personnel in national cemeteries and observe moments of silence.

Children's Day in Nigeria

The first Children's Day was celebrated in Nigeria in 1950. It was an initiative of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then opposition leader of the Western House of Assembly during the colonial rule. He came up with this initiative after he lost his daughter to Malaria shortly after she was born in 1940. He held the protection of children from abuse by adults and other youths in high esteem
