The topic of euthanasia is a delicate one. There are those who believe in perserving the sanctity of life, no matter what that may mean. On the other hand, there are those who feel that no one should be able to dictate what the terminally ill and elderly do with their lives, especially when it comes to their suffering. No matter where you stand on the issue, the topic of morality seems to play a vital role in the matter.
El tema de la eutanasia es delicado. Hay quienes creen en preservar la santidad de la vida, sin importar lo que eso signifique. Por otro lado, están aquellos que sienten que nadie debería poder dictar lo que los enfermos terminales y los ancianos deben hacer con sus vidas, especialmente cuando se trata de su sufrimiento. No importa cuál sea su posición sobre el tema, el tema de la moralidad parece jugar un papel vital en el asunto.
For me personally, having been raised Roman Catholic, I do believe in perserving the sanctity of life. The Church teaches us that God created each of us in His image, gave each of us unique talents and capabilities, and that we must use our talents to the best of our abilities in order to improve life and the lives of those around us. The Church teaches us that, to abruptly terminate the life that God created for us, or to intentionally harm ourselves in any way, is a sin.
Para mí personalmente, habiendo sido criado como católico romano, creo en la preservación de la santidad de la vida. La Iglesia nos enseña que Dios nos creó a cada uno de nosotros a Su imagen, nos dio a cada uno de nosotros talentos y capacidades únicas, y que debemos usar nuestros talentos lo mejor que podamos para mejorar la vida y la vida de quienes nos rodean. La Iglesia nos enseña que, terminar abruptamente con la vida que Dios creó para nosotros, o dañarnos intencionalmente de cualquier forma, es pecado.
However, if someone is unable to use their talents, or enjoy the life that God has given them due to a terminal illness, then who are we to determine what they should do with their lives? While I do believe in the sanctity of life, I believe that there should be exceptions. For example, for the topic of pregnancy, I am strictly pro-life. Sometimes, however, there are circumstances in which the fetus or mother cannot survive the pregnancy, so it must be terminated. In cases such as this, what good does it do to prolong suffering?
Sin embargo, si alguien no puede usar sus talentos o disfrutar de la vida que Dios le ha dado debido a una enfermedad terminal, ¿quiénes somos nosotros para determinar qué debe hacer con su vida? Si bien creo en la santidad de la vida, creo que debería haber excepciones. Por ejemplo, para el tema del embarazo, soy estrictamente pro-vida. A veces, sin embargo, hay circunstancias en las que el feto o la madre no pueden sobrevivir al embarazo, por lo que debe interrumpirse. En casos como este, ¿de qué sirve prolongar el sufrimiento?
Similarly, I believe there should be exceptions when it comes to the terminally ill. For example, if it has been determined that it is certain the individual will not survive, again, what good does it do to prolong someone's suffering? If the person has determined that it is truly what they want to do, we should not prohibit them from doing so, especially when their suffering is immense. On the contrary, there are situations in which the person's health could improve; I personally feel that life should be preserved. If there is a chance that they will be able to enjoy their lives, they should take it.
Del mismo modo, creo que debería haber excepciones cuando se trata de enfermos terminales. Por ejemplo, si se ha determinado que es seguro que el individuo no sobrevivirá, de nuevo, ¿de qué sirve prolongar el sufrimiento de alguien? Si la persona ha determinado que es realmente lo que quiere hacer, no debemos prohibirle que lo haga, especialmente cuando su sufrimiento es inmenso. Here, in my country of Canada, the topic of euthanasia has taken a very drastic turn. Previously, the practice used to be reserved for just that: the terminally ill and elderly. However, in more recent months, we have seen our government trying to persuade disabled and suicidal individuals to take this approach as well, even going so far as to target minors. For many, including myself, this approach is far too extreme. While those with disabilities do face challenges most of us do not deal with, they can still lead very prosperous lives. Being disabled should never be viewed as a death sentence.
Aquí, en mi país Canadá, el tema de la eutanasia ha dado un giro muy drástico. Anteriormente, la práctica solía estar reservada solo para eso: los enfermos terminales y los ancianos. Sin embargo, en meses más recientes, hemos visto a nuestro gobierno tratando de persuadir a las personas discapacitadas y suicidas para que también adopten este enfoque, llegando incluso a atacar a los menores. Para muchos, incluido yo mismo, este enfoque es demasiado extremo. Similarly, being suicidal is not a circumstance that should involve euthanasia either. Having been an extremely suicidal individual for many years myself, I am very grateful that I never actually gave up on life. Things became very depressing and bleak, but if I had given up, I would not have the blessed life I have today, nor would I have recognized my purpose. I truly believe the purpose of life is to procreate, to raise offspring with the proper guidance and morals to lead a life greater than your own. Like many say, suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems. Suicidal individuals need proper intervention and resources, not euthanasia.
Del mismo modo, tener tendencias suicidas tampoco es una circunstancia que deba implicar la eutanasia. Habiendo sido una persona extremadamente suicida durante muchos años, estoy muy agradecida de que en realidad nunca renuncié a la vida. Las cosas se volvieron muy deprimentes y sombrías, pero si me hubiera rendido, no tendría la vida bendecida que tengo hoy, ni habría reconocido mi propósito. Realmente creo que el propósito de la vida es procrear, criar descendencia con la orientación y la moral adecuadas para llevar una vida mejor que la propia. Como muchos dicen, el suicidio es una solución permanente a problemas temporales. Las personas suicidas necesitan la intervención y los recursos adecuados, no la eutanasia.
