Ever since I was born we had this piano here in the house. It was bought about 100 years ago by my great-grandfather for my grandma, who really became a very good pianist at that time, too.
So I was strumming away on it from a very young age. Later I built a little living cave under the piano for my toys and dolls. So I grew up with it.
Schon als ich geboren wurde hatten wir dieses Klavier hier im Haus. Es wurde vor in etwa 100 Jahren von meinem Urgroßvater für meine Oma gekauft, die damals wirklich auch eine sehr gute Pianistin wurde.
So habe ich von ganz klein auf darauf herum geklimpert. Später habe ich mir unter dem Klavier eine kleine Wohnhöhle für meine Spielsachen und Puppen gebaut. Ich bin also damit aufgewachsen.
At school I first learned to play the flute and soon after that I wanted to learn to play the piano properly. However, after 3 years I lost the desire to do so, although I still loved the piano and playing it.
In der Schule habe ich zuerst Blockflöte gelernt und bald darauf kam der Wunsch auf, richtig Klavier spielen zu lernen. Allerdings verlor ich nach 3 Jahren die Lust daran, obwohl ich das Klavier und das Klavierspielen immer noch liebte.
It actually took me 20 years to realize why I had lost the desire back then. While cleaning out old notes, I came across the tunes book from which my teacher last taught me. Bela Bartok! Probably hardly anyone will know it, so here is a small sample:

Schade, dass ich den Zusammenhang damals nicht sah. Ein sehr gutes Beispiel, wie wichtig gute Lehrer für die Entwicklung der Talente sind.
I then still played, bought myself music tunes and to strum little songs my knowledge is enough. But sadly I never learned more skills.
Ich habe dann schon trotzdem noch gespielt, habe mir selbst Noten gekauft und um kleine Lieder zu klimpern reicht es. Aber so richtig gut gelernt habe ich es dann leider nie mehr.
The full sound, a piano has is the reason why I love it so much. With hardly any other single instrument can you achieve such a cloud of sound. And there are so many different musical directions! Every time it sounds different.
Der volle Klang, den ein Klavier hat ist der Grund, weshalb ich diese Musik so sehr liebe. Mit kaum einem anderen einzelnen Instrument kann man so eine Klangwolke erzielen. Und es gibt so viele unterschiedliche Musikrichtungen! Jedes mal klingt es anders.

By the way, that's about the sound our piano has. Not all pianos sound the same. An upright piano has a completely different sound than a grand or short grand piano (which is ours).
Das ist übrigens in etwa der Klang, den unser Klavier hat. Es klingen ja nicht alle gleich. Ein Piano hat einen völlig anderen Klang als ein Flügel oder Stutzflügel (was unseres ist)

This next piece reminded me that playing the piano is something like meditating. Once you know the piece, it's like your fingers and your body just play it by themselves. You don't have to think, most of the time you just have to look at the keyboard for a moment at certain points but could close your eyes for the most parts.
The piano, the music and you are simply ONE.
Dieses nächste Stück erinnerte mich daran, dass Klavier spielen so etwas wie Meditieren ist. Wenn man das Stück erst einmal kann, dann ist es so, als würden deine Finger und dein Körper das einfach von selbst spielen. Du musst nicht nachdenken, meist musst du auch nur an bestimmten Stellen kurz auf die Tastatur schauen und könntest die meiste Zeit die Augen geschlossen halten.
Das Klavier, die Musik und Du sind einfach EINS.
Now our old piano is still here in the house and is played only rarely. It would simply be missing if it wasn't there anymore. Most of the time, like now in the middle of the night, when I would like to play it, it doesn't work, because playing quietly is not possible. The sound is too full, it penetrates through all ceilings and walls. Then I rather reach for the guitar, which I also like to play very much.
Nun steht unser altes Klavier noch immer hier im Haus und wird nur noch selten gespielt. Es würde einfach fehlen, wenn es nicht mehr da wäre. Meist, so wie jetzt mitten in der Nacht, wenn ich Lust hätte, dann geht das nicht, weil leise spielen ist damit nicht möglich. Zu voll ist der Klang, er dringt durch alle Decken und Mauern. Da greife ich dann eher mal zur Gitarre, die ich auch sehr gerne spiele.

And plants also do well on it, although here every true piano connoisseur would now cry out, because actually moisture (flower pots) and sensitive piano lacquer do not get along so well. But our old piece no longer has this high gloss anyway, so it's fine for us the way it is. It simply belongs to us after all these decades.

Und Pflanzen machen sich auch gut darauf, wobei hier würde jetzt jeder wahre Klavierkenner aufschreien, denn eigentlich verträgt sich Feuchtigkeit (Blumentöpfe) und empfindlicher Klavierlack nicht so gut. Aber unser altes Stück hat diesen Hochglanz ohnehin nicht mehr, daher ist das für uns schon in Ordnung so wie es ist. Es gehört einfach zu uns nach all den Jahrzehnten.
