Solidaridad - Ladies of Hive Community Contest #103

1️⃣ What do you think about news of this sort? Do you think you could ever live in such a conservative society? Would you even consider briefly visiting such a country with such laws? How can we assist such women, who cannot afford to flee to a safe place?

---

It is well known that gender inequality is universal, and affects both women and men, but there is a part of the population where gender violence is accentuated against women. The Arab or Muslim women.

---

A culture in which the minimization of women's fundamental rights has become generalized, where their identity, their experiences and beliefs must follow a code of conduct, where obedience must be their daily bread. Where the freedom to be, to think, to express oneself is violated.

A place where, for the simple fact of showing a lock of hair, can lead to aggression, mockery and mistreatment and ultimately lead to death. A place that should not exist.

No one should have to live in fear, afraid to express themselves, to show a smile, to make their own decisions. And in these places, even the act of leaving the house must be accompanied by a male figure who represents them.

I am surprised to read in the news, how these women are harassed, harassed and mistreated, for the simple fact of being born under a nationality that imposes them to follow a code of conduct, a religion, restricting their rights, their pleasure, their decisions. Is all this really necessary? What makes an Arab, Muslim or Iranian woman different from me? Where are their rights?

All these questions haunt my mind as I write these lines, as I do a little research, I come across words like "Shariah", "hadd", "tazir" and I shudder to think of all the repercussions they bring with them.

Do you think you could ever live in such a conservative society?

I wonder what my life would have been like if I had been born on the other side of the world, with a different nationality. Simply because of that, am I less deserving of respect?

It seems to me that there is a great social inequality and the situation has been normalized. I would certainly have to submit, fulfill a role in society, and live in constant fear that if I stepped out of the code of conduct, punishment would be warranted and well seen for not "fulfilling my role as a woman or devoted wife".

I know I wouldn't be happy living that way, I don't think anyone should live under such circumstances.

Would you even consider briefly visiting such a country with such laws?

I believe that each country has its riches and cultural heritage to contribute to humanity, beyond its disagreements and difficulties that its inhabitants go through. Therefore, it would be interesting to know their social environment and the situations that trigger these factors. Of course, always with respect and caution. Tourism is never going to be the same as establishing your life in a new place.

Knowing that you have to comply with certain codes to avoid getting others in trouble, or putting my physical and moral integrity at risk.

How can we assist such women, who cannot afford to flee to a safe place?

This is a question that leaves one reflecting on the matter, that we should ask ourselves in an act of solidarity with all those women who live or have been part of abuse, harassment, discrimination at any level?

I believe that one of the main steps we can take from where we are, is to be aware of this reality, to echo and make a voice for all those who cannot do it.

To raise our voices for our sisters, for all those mothers, sisters and daughters who need us. Who need the rules of the game to change. And not only in those countries, but all around our society. Raise our voices for the respect of our rights.

We deserve to live, we deserve to be respected, we deserve to be happy.

Everyone should have the right to a life without fear.
