I am very happy to join the participation in the Ladies of Hive Contest #150 For this week @tibaire presents us with two very interesting questions. I will definitely participate in the second question 2️⃣ With which woman in the history of your country do you identify, and why?
It was not easy to make a decision, I went back and forth in my thoughts many times, because the women of my country, Venezuela, not only made history, but many of them were the ones who sometimes changed the course of history. Daring, defiant women, determined to leave anonymity behind and to dignify spaces monopolized by men and that was denied to us just for being women. I identify with all of them because each in her own way made her contribution.
But for this opportunity, I will share with you how I identify with the Venezuelan Sara Bendahan. I came to her story, investigating, and researching after an encounter associated with my professional training, perhaps with a bittersweet and at the same time challenging feeling. Come with me, let's make this journey together.
Perseverance made woman
In a previous post, I told you that I am a medical student. During the first year of my career, I interacted with the history of medicine and in a special way, with the Venezuelan medical history. Getting to know our medical precursors.
I really enjoyed getting into the story. I was excited and eager to walk their paths, to learn about their lives. Some names were familiar to me. Outstanding prodigious minds that gave national and international prestige to our medicine. But there was one detail, they were only men. That repulsed me to the core. I refused to accept that no woman in my country had not contributed to the greatness of our medicine. So I set out to investigate and discovered that, despite their contributions, they remain underhanded.
An example of this was Sara Bendahan, the first woman doctor in Venezuela, the first Doctor of Medical Sciences graduated from the Central University of Venezuela, in 1939. At a time when women had limited "rights", they could not even vote. Sara, in spite of her unstable health, bravely took on the challenge. In spaces that up to that moment were exclusive to men.
I identify with Dr. Bendahan for her perseverance and dedication. She is for me a source of motivation and inspiration, worthy of admiration. An example of effort, determination, and tenacity, where she gave no chance to discouragement, in a profession at that time dominated by men with many prejudices. Despite the advances, I think that there is still much to be done to achieve equality, we must do, do, and do. Do not give up.
Dr. Sara Bendahan, is perseverance made woman.

No fue fácil tomar una decisión, muchas veces di vueltas y vueltas en mis pensamientos, porque las mujeres de mi país, Venezuela, no sólo hicieron historia, sino que muchas de ellas fueron las que en ocasiones cambiaron el curso de la historia. Mujeres atrevidas, desafiantes, decididas a dejar atrás el anonimato y dignificar espacios monopolizados por los hombres y que nos eran negados sólo por ser mujeres. Me identifico con todas ellas porque cada una a su manera hizo su aporte.
Pero en esta oportunidad, compartiré con ustedes cómo me identifico con la Venezolana Sara Bendahan. Llegué a su historia, indagando, investigando después de un encuentro asociado a mi formación profesional, quizás con un sentimiento agridulce y a la vez desafiante. Acompáñenme, hagamos juntos este viaje.
La perseverancia hecha mujer
En una publicación anterior, les comenté que soy estudiante de medicina. Durante el primer año de mi carrera, interactué con la historia de la medicina y de manera especial, con la historia médica venezolana. Conociendo a nuestros precursores médicos.
Me gustó mucho adentrarme en la historia. Estaba emocionada y deseosa de recorrer sus caminos, de conocer sus vidas. Algunos nombres me resultaban familiares. Destacadas mentes prodigiosas que dieron prestigio nacional e internacional a nuestra medicina. Pero había un detalle, sólo eran hombres. Eso me repugnaba hasta la médula. Me negaba a aceptar que ninguna mujer de mi País no hubiese contribuido a la grandeza de nuestra medicina. Así que me puse a investigar y descubrí que, a pesar de sus contribuciones, siguen siendo solapadas.
Un ejemplo de ello fue Sara Bendahan, la primera mujer médico de Venezuela, la primera Doctora en Ciencias Médicas graduada en la Universidad Central de Venezuela, en 1939. En una época en que las mujeres tenían "derechos" limitados, ni siquiera podían votar. Sara, a pesar de su inestable salud, asumió con valentía el reto. En espacios que hasta ese momento eran exclusivos de los hombres.
Me identifico con la Dra. Bendahan por su perseverancia y dedicación. Ella es para mí una fuente de motivación e inspiración, digna de admiración. Un ejemplo de esfuerzo, determinación y tenacidad, donde ella no dio oportunidad al desaliento, en una profesión en ese momento dominada por hombres con muchos prejuicios. A pesar de los avances, creo que aún queda mucho por hacer para lograr la igualdad, debemos hacer, hacer y hacer. No hay que rendirse.
La Dra. Sara Bendahan, es la perseverancia hecha mujer.
