Today we are going to turn back the hourglass. When you go to the town of Sille, one of the most beautiful places in Konya, time is always running backwards. One step leads to Rome, another to another different civilization... In this content I will talk about the caves from the Roman era.

Bugün kum saatini geriye çevireceğiz. Konya'nın en güzel yerlerinden biri olan Sille kasabasına gittiğinizde zaman daima geriye akıyor çünkü. Bir adımda karşınıza Roma çıkıyor, bir başka farklı bir medeniyet... Bu içeriğimde Roma devrinden kalan mağaralardan bahsedeceğim.
Sille is a historical settlement built in town style. It is located about 10 km from the district center. I went there with my own car. There are also bus services for those who want to visit.
At the first entrance to Sille, a large parking lot welcomes you. Immediately afterwards, you start walking on the streets paved with cobblestones. The streets are closed to vehicle traffic during the day. In this way, you can move through the colorful streets in peace and safety. Along the streets, there is a marketplace where folk products are sold, museums, cafes and various historical buildings. After walking among these beauties for a while, the mountain opposite attracts your attention. You see about forty caves of different shapes and sizes.
Sille, kasaba tarzında inşa edilmiş tarihi bir yerleşim yeri. İlçe merkezine yaklaşık 10 km uzaklıkta yer alıyor. Oraya kendi aracımla gittim. Ziyaret etmek isteyenler için otobüs seferleri de yapılmakta.
Sille'ye ilk girişte büyük bir otopark karşılıyor sizi. Hemen sonrasında kaldırım taşlarıyla döşeli sokaklarda yürümeye başlıyorsunuz. Sokaklar, gün boyunca araç trafiğine kapalı. Bu sayede huzur ve güven içinde rengarenk sokaklarda ilerleyebiliyorsunuz. Sokak boyunca halk ürünlerinin satıldığı bir pazar yeri, müzeler, kafeler ve çeşit çeşit tarihi yapılar var. Bu güzellikler arasından bir süre ilerledikten sonra karşıdaki dağ çekiyor dikkatinizi. Farklı şekil ve boyutlardaki yaklaşık kırk adet mağarayı görüyorsunuz.
I was excited from the first moment I saw the caves. Normally, I am a cave lover. The moment I saw many caves at the same time, I started heading in that direction by the shortest routes.
Mağaraları ilk gördüğüm andan itibaren heyecanlandım. Normalde de mağaraları seven biriyim. Birçok mağarayı aynı anda gördüğüm an en kestirme yollardan o tarafa doğru ilerlemeye başladım.
It didn't take me long to reach the hill where the caves were. As in all my trips, my time was limited. There were many other places I had to see. Fortunately, the distance between the places to visit in Sille was not more than a few kilometers. When I saw the caves, I realized that this was the place where my time could be generously spent. And I went into detail. I even started going in and out of dangerous places below ground level.
"Mağaraların olduğu tepeye ulaşmam çok sürmedi. Her gezimde olduğu gibi zamanım kısıtlıydı çünkü. Görmem gereken birçok yer daha vardı. It is thought that these caves were built during the early Christian times. The caves were used for religious worship and settlement. They also served as shelters in times of war. The fact that they are connected underground explains this better.
Bu mağaraların ilk Hristiyanlık dönemlerinde yapıldığı düşünülüyor. Mağaralar dini ibadetler için ve yerleşim amaçlı kullanılmış. Ayrıca savaş zamanlarında sığınak görevi de görmüş. Yer altından bağlantılı olmaları bu durumu daha iyi açıklıyor.
Helena, the mother of the Byzantine emperor, stopped by Sille during her pilgrimage. She had the Church of Aya Eleni built. I photographed it on my way from the caves to the church.
