Commune-ication: A Very Important Relationship Tool!

Edited using Canva

What is Communication? This is one question I often ask myself and people around. People always respond by saying, "Communication is the act of sending information from one place or person to another. I always get similar definition each time I ask the question. I have always describe communication as the act of sharing ideas and feelings. This is indeed a very broad topic, and it is one of the most important tool in any form of relationship you are in. In the present day society, a lot of us lack good communication skills, including myself, I know the area's I have my flaws when it comes to communicating and I am also aware of the areas I am doing well.

We have to understand that, there is a big difference between TALKING and trying to COMMUNICATE an information to someone. When Talking, we only have a sender and a receiver, the information is not vise versa in this particular case. We just have one sender conveying the message to the receiver, trying to make sure the receiver accept his or her own idea or decision. But when you communicate, the reverse is the case, you always have the sender sending a message in form of a conversation or an idea, and the receiver accept and process the information given to him or her before giving a fitting response as a reply. When communicating, both parties involved are suppose to share ideas, not one person doing all the talking and the other just accepting, no, communication does not work that way, it becomes communication when we have a sender sending a message and the receiver process and understand this message and then give a response back to the sender. In other words, both parties involved, are senders and receivers at the same time.

There are different ways of communicating ideas and thoughts. It is really essential we have good skill in all of these different areas. Understanding how to apply them and how to know when they are used Is very important in any form of relationship, be it a relationship with your spouse or a relationship with your friend, a father and child relationship, a mother and child relationship or even a teacher and student relationship. It is very important we know how to use the different ways of communicating ideas properly. One of the ways we communicate ideas in a relationship is through Verbal Communication. This involve face to face interaction, and this way of communicating always work hand in hand with the Non-verbal way of communicating, which normally involves gestures and the different signs that people give. Hence, you will here people say, "I want to look at his/her eyes when I tell them", what they really want is, while having the verbal way of communicating ideas, some reactions that the receiver show in form of gesture make us understand if they agree or disagree with the information we are trying to pass.

People have to take the Non-verbal side very seriously, because it tend to speak more truth most of the time and other times too, it can be miss leading though. So, how best do we communicate ideas with these two ways of Communication? We can do that by being a great LISTENER, yes, a lot of us don't listen enough, from the different signs shown, to what the next person is actually communicating verbally, we don't just listen enough. A good speaker who is a poor listener is just a large tin making the finest of noise. For communication to be effective, we have to be both a Great Speaker and a Great Listener. As much as we want others to listen to us and understand where we are coming from, we should as well listen to others and understand where they are coming from. If you are always only at the receiving end or only at the point of sending these information, then I am sorry, you have not communicate any idea, it has to be both ways, be the sender and also the receiver when having a conversation in other for it to be described as a meaningful communication between two persons.

So, exactly what is the main purpose of the Communication? Why do we even bother to communicate these ideas and thoughts? All of these is just for one main purpose or goal, and that is MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING. For any communication to be regarded as a successful one, there has to be a point where both parties involved come to agree and accept each others ideas. Understand there is a great difference between you trying to compromise and you actually coming to have a mutual understanding of something. The process of you compromising, all you are doing is accepting an idea just because you have to please the next person, that's not the case when trying to have a mutual understanding. When trying to have a mutual understanding, both parties get to that point where they see reasons with each others idea and decide to respect their different ideas. So, when trying to communicate an idea, and for us to say that communication is/was successful, both parties must come to a point where they understand each other.

We should understand that, MISUNDERSTANDING is bound to occur at any point in time while trying to communicate our different ideas. But then, communication becomes really effective when we know how to manage any form of misunderstanding that may likely occur. The ability to handle these things as they come up in your relationship with the next person very well, is very essential. How we react and what we say to these things also, is very important. So, we have to learn to be patient while communicating an idea or better still avoid that conversation until you know how to better manage any crisis that will come up. Communication is key in any kind of relationship, and the ability to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills.
