Hello Hivers! We have a new Question Of The Week which focuses on Communication. If you will like to participate, you may read the post HERE.

Communication is a part of our daily lives. It's a process of passing information from one person to another or a group of people through a means that is easily understood. The purpose of communication is to understand the message sent or passed across. If the message is not understood, the purpose of communicating is defeated.

If communication is one way, that is, a person talking without giving room for input from the other person, it is not communication. Communication involves the sender, the receiver and the message.

Communication is not only verbal and non-verbal, it could also be written or visual. For instance, this article is a form of written communication to every reader. My mom making eyes at me to behave myself is non-verbal communication and believe me, it's well understood! LOL.

I believe that communication is vital or essential to a healthy relationship both at home, school or our workplace. In fact, without proper communication, the world would be thrown into chaos. This is where the element of understanding comes in.

When we communicate, we pass along information. Where the message is lost or not understood, we lose information and chaos may arise from this.

Communication is necessary to an orderly life. To foster our relationships, learning and developing good communication is important and can help us succeed, though this takes time and practice.

Communication Differences
I have learned from experience that communication varies according to languages, ethnicity, and country. What may be an acceptable method of communicating, maybe an insult or even derogatory in another country. In such circumstances, we should study the forms of communication acceptable in a place before we attempt to commune with the people. Such communication should be done cautiously.

In Nigeria, we can boast of more than 250 ethnic groups and languages, each one distinct in its communication. I have had the privilege to move around a bit right from childhood and so I am quite familiar with what is obtainable in some parts of my country.

When I am communicating with people, I try to keep in mind their ethnicity or country (if they are not Nigerians). Where I am not sure of what to do, I apologize in advance so as to clear up any miscommunication that might arise.

Listening Is Key In Communication
For smooth and effective communication, we should learn to listen more before speaking. Usually, some individuals believe speaking more than listening would earn them some points. This usually happens in an argument and it makes me uncomfortable when I come across such people.

Understanding is an important part of communication and this can be achieved by listening more, observing and empathizing with the other person or people.

I have noticed that people who have honed their communication skills attract more people to themselves. This is because we want to be heard. We like people who are willing to give us listening ears. Likewise, we too should be willing to listen.
