Good morning hivers i hope you all had a nice night.when talking about rock to my own understanding, rock is a hard material forming part of the earth's crust.it is usually made up of several minerals.examples are granite, mudstone, limestone and marble.
CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS
Rocks are classified and identified on the following bases:
a) Colour
b) Shape
C) lustre
d) Materials (their make up)
e) Others include their age,how they are formed,their texture and how they resist weather conditions.when you consider all These you can then classify rocks into three groups: igneous rock, sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock.let pick it one after the other and talk about them.
IGNEOUS ROCK:
Igneous rocks are rocks formed from hot molten materials from the centre of the earth which comes to the earth's surface,cools and solidifies or becomes solid.how we can identify igneous rocks: igneous rocks are light and dark in colour,the rocks are crystalline in shape,igneous rocks are shiny in appearance, igneous rock are very hard.

Sedimentary rocks are rocks formed when rocks are broken down and carried away from one place to another place by action of wind, rainfall,rivers and moving ice.the materials deposited are further cemented by the weight of further deposits.the rock formed is usually in layers and contains shells.how we can identify sedimentary rocks: Sedimentary rocks occur in layers, they are non-crystalline in shape,the rocks have rounded particles,the rocks are soft or easy to break.
METAMORPHIC ROCKS:

Metamorphic rocks are rocks formed as a result of great heat and pressure on the igneous or sedimentary rocks.examples are marble(from limestone), quartzite (from limestone),(from shale)and gneiss(from granite).how we can identify metamorphic rocks: the rocks are crystalline in Shape,the rocks are hard or do not break easily,they split into thin slabs.
MAJOR TYPES OF ROCKS IN NIGERIA AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS
Granite which is an igneous rock is found in ajaokuta,suleja,minna,jos and biu plateau of gongola state.
Limestone which is an example of a sedimentary rock is found at warri area of Delta State and at Nkalagu in ebonyi state.
Marble which is a metamorphic rock is found at abakaliki in ebonyi state,igbetti in oyo State and okigwe in imo State.
Sandstone and gravels which are sedimentary rock are found at abakaliki in ebonyi state and okigwe.
