How to Use Indigenous Coconut Grater

Traditional Coconut grater/ Kudkuran
Have you ever seen or used indigenous coconut stool? Kindly raise your hands for those who have experienced, lol. We still have this tool and I was glad I had the opportunity last time when I visited my mom. One night, when we were cooking veggies with coconut milk and the market is like 30 minute walk from our farm house ( no vehicle access to our farm, just trail) that would take a lot of time of walking but that shouldn't have been a problem because I love walking. In that case, that was for emergency reason and we do have our old-aged kaguran/ grater so we decided to used it. It was fun experienced once again. I didn't like it when I was a kid, that task has always been a calvary. I appreciate it more this time, simplicity as it should be.

I believe this has been around for centuries. I know that a traditional Filipino home must-have this indigenous blend of chair and kitchen tool. Perhaps, it is also widely used up to this present in many places in Asian country. This manual machine is made of elongated wood for its bench and its metal grater with serrated blade attached on it, which grate the coconut.

How to use traditional coconut grater?
In order to use this, the person have to sit on it facing the protruding arms, with your legs apart just like riding a horse, with your hands holding the half cut coconut and shred/ rub it against to the grater that separate the flesh and the shell.

Taaaddaaa!!! Done!
Although electric shaving is on the rise, some still turn to this manual grating for some reasons. In our case, electricity did not reach yet in to our farm house which I think this is also the main reason for others. Second, it saves electricity which is agreeable but this tool is not for immediate purposes. Which one would you choose? Depending on the situation, like good for biceps workout I mean the whole arm muscles would get to work. One thing I like.

Ok, perhaps some of you may wonder what veggies did we have that desperately needed coconut milk...In provinces, we used to have squash, spinach, eggplant, and spinach and then added with dried fish- this add the taste. These veggies are known to be high in vitamins and minerals. You can actually mix any of whatever veggies you prefer. No rules for that as long as food taste good to our palate, and tummy satisfied, that's the main goal, right? You can agree or disagree, I would love learn and hear your opinion on this matter.

The final result. Veggies with coconut milk One thing that is advantage living in country, you don't have option for junkies. You are surrounded with fresh food; fruits, vegetables, free range animals that are not chemically modified which you can butcher any time you like. We'd just eaten fresh food in our entire week of visit with my mom and always looking forward to spend time with her and in the country, so uplifting to live there.
