Wood Cutting Trip to Forest - Saturday

Everything was ready save loading a couple thing s in the trucks so I started off my day with a soak. I had a long day ahead of me and wanted to be sure to start it off right. We had gotten a bit of rain overnight, only 0.03 inch but at least it was something.

I was on the road about 8:15 and after a stop for some coffee at the res gas station I was heading up the road. On my way up I stopped to see the tree that saved my life when my truck smashed into it. I left this marker nailed to it up high and stop at it each time I come up.

I hit the camp site 2 hours after leaving the farm and it took me only a few minutes to find the trees I would be dropping.

The first was this 80 foot tall mostly dead tree which came down nicely and it did a pretty good job of limbing itself as it landed. I only had about a 14 of the branches to cut off.

I'm glad I took a second chain with me because the fresh chain did a solid job of getting through the first tree and I got it all cut up before the thing dulled out.

I dropped the second tree exactly where I wanted it and after a couple of trying cuts I gave up and changed the chain to the old one.

The first tree ended up a nice amount of rounds but still not enough to fill the truck and trailer.

With the better chain on I got the bulk of the second tree cut up.

The first big tree filled the trailer and truck to partial. The trailer tongue was super low with all the weight and it drug a number of times when I went over bumps. I was pretty happy that I brought my ramps with as I was able to roll the rounds onto the trailer and not have to lift them as much.

The second tree filled both to the top. I really couldn't have put much more on especially with a 2 hour drive home.

I left only about 20% of the second tree but it had a bunch of weird branches and thick gnarls that I didn't want to deal with since they would be a pain to split.

The same asshole is running his cows still in the area. Likely the same cows that I had to avoid when I crashed my truck. It is truly an asshole move to run cows in an area that has VERY little in the way of food for them and they destroy all the meadows and creeks. Plus he runs them out of season so often but never gets any fines or anything.

There was a fire on the mountain above the camp the prior month and as I was driving down I saw a little puff of smoke from a still burning tree. I expected it to rain on me but it barely sprinkled the entire time I was out.

It took me 45 minutes to get from camp the 14 miles down to the highway where I stopped and tightened all the straps. Once on the road my truck did admirably and was able to roll with traffic the whole time. I stopped in Colville for some food then headed home.

Once home the first thing I wanted was a beer and then the tub. It was raining at the farm most of the day and it continued to until the evening. As we soaked the tail end of the storm duped a nice bout of rain on us.

Today I have to unload the wood into the yard, I have squash that HAS to be picked now since it has been a couple of days, it's going to be 37F tonight so I may have to cover the garden again, and likely work on the melons some more.
