ecoTrain Question Of The Week Season 6 #3 - COMMUNE-ICATION

Welcome back to the Question Of The Week! This week we focus on.. Communication! Did you ever notice how it sounds like the word commune? I didn't until today! This weeks question is open ended, and all about how we speak, what we say, how we listen, and how we respond. There is so much communication going on in many forms be it words, body language, tone and much much more. The way we communicate ends up defining us, and has a huge effect on how people view us, how people respond to us, and our ability to get our feelings heard and our needs met. I have learned so much about communication lately, especially relating to non violent communication. It is HARD to communicate well, and just yesterday i dropped the ball when trying to communicate my feelings about something that happened to me on Hive. Despite my best intentions to simply communicate how i felt about something without causing harm, i failed! One thing is for sure, good communication ain't easy!

When we communicate we often end up blaming others for how we feel. Its very difficult to communicate in a way that fosters true intimacy and have our needs met because no one ever taught us to do so. Personally I think we should learn how to communicate better in school, but that is another issue altogether! I believe the nature and intention of our commune-ication should be to foster deeper connections and to use our words to help us understand one another better. When we can learn to use our words with this clear intent we can discover a whole new world and maintain many very long and deep relationships.

Communication is made up of speaking, and listening. Listening is a side of communication that is also often neglected. This is largely because no one like to feel blamed or judged, and so when we speak and communicate in this way we simply react and push back because we feel that we have done nothing wrong. In my opinion, if someone is communicating something to us, even if it includes some kind of blame, we need to learn to listen and really hear what is behind the words so that we can honour what that person is trying to tell us.

So, this week i invite you to share about... communication.. You can write about anything that you have to share on this topic. You could share a story about how communication has been a real challenge with a personal story. Perhaps you had a great conflict that was finally resolved through good communication. Please share how that resolved and what you did to facilitate it. Please also share how it felt before and afterwards, because at the end of the day that is what communication is all about.. having our feelings heard and our needs met!

Some other ideas that you can write about include writing about language in general. Our language is essentially made up of words, and to some extent these words are all labels. We may all use the same words and yet these words have different meanings to each of us. Do you think our languages are the best way to express how we feel.. or do you use other methods such a physical contact, body language, or intimacy instead to express yourself? Why do you think we have different understandings of the same words? Is this a good thing or is it just confusing. What would you suggest we can do to improve our collective communication skills? Do you like speaking about certain things more than others? Do you find it easier to communicate in order to teach others. Do you avoid speaking about your feelings because its difficult and often ends up with a conflict? These days much of our communication is via test and one way voice messaging. Do you think this is a good way to communicate? How does it compare to a face to face chat? These are just some ideas, and I welcome all your points of view and whatever you have to say about .. Communication!
