Pigeons in the city and their symbolism

Birds

This was the topic of a recent photography challenge that I missed. But this is also a continuation of my post from last week, in which I showed you this place - the central square in the center of the city, the pedestrian zone of Dimitrovgrad. The so called "Poetry" Square.
Yeah, it sure is a Poetry Square, when birds like it so much. 😊

Pigeons as urban birds are perhaps the most wronged birds that can exist. I am even surprised by this fact, and I am sure you will be surprised too, when you realize it.
Yes, life in the city is hard for all animals. For all cats and dogs if your country allows them to exist on city streets as it is in my country of origin. But life is hard for birds too. They too, like dogs and cats, struggle for survival.
But... there is always a 'but' when I talk about pigeons.
There is something mystical about these birds.

It wouldn't be if they weren't so woven into human history - from Noah's ark, through messengers during wars, and then the Pablo Picasso's paintings.

Doves have always been symbols of peace, freedom and hope. They were heralds, saviors, messenger and heroes, sacred birds perhaps.
The white dove plays in world history the symbolic role of the white swallow in Bulgarian folklore. I will not tell you this tale now. At least because it tells about a non-existent animal, while the white dove exists to this day - an extremely beautiful and noble animal. And yet underestimated.

It was in Malta when I first saw these signs: do not feed the pigeons.
I felt strange. As if feeding some starving animal is a crime. To this day, I don't understand these signs, which I see more and more nowadays. I also don't understand the fences of broken glass and barbed wire stretched over various surfaces to prevent pigeons from landing on them.

Are these animals really a pest? In the urban environment. Have we so quickly forgotten their so important role in human history? And another thing - have you noticed that pigeons are the main inhabitants of monasteries and churches - on the roofs or, if possible, inside the buildings themselves. Doesn't that say enough about them and their symbolism, their meaning? Their hidden meaning, which we were once able to decipher and realize, but today we can no longer do.
