In today's short post I'd like to share with you a personal milestone; after going through life as girlfriend and boyfriend for 34 years, having lived together for 32 of those years, and after having raised a son, who's now 22 years old and almost ready to leave the house to live on his own, today we, my girlfriend and I, finally got married :-) I consider myself ridiculously lucky to be able to say this: if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing, as any minor change could have caused me to end up in a different position than I am now. This is how I feel most of the time, not always of course; I too have moments that I curse and ask myself "why me?" whenever something bad happens. But overall I'm content and happy, for which I'm so grateful and to which you, dear reader, have contributed a large part, just by being here; I would have given this up a long time ago if it weren't for your presence in my life, however remote or indirect.
Six Degrees of Separation (1993) ORIGINAL TRAILER
And that's what I would like to remind you of; the fact that we're all part of each other's life and that we have an influence on each other, however small or large, that we're connected to each other in a very real way. One of the most popular ideas to this effect is six degrees of separation; the idea that all people on the planet are six, or fewer, social connections away from each other, so that a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps. Although the science on this is not yet conclusive and the idea started out as an "urban myth", science is taking it very serious now. Here's the introduction to the below linked BBC documentary, which I hope you'll enjoy:
Originally thought to be an urban myth, it now appears that anyone on the planet can be connected in just a few steps of association. Six degrees of separation is also at the heart of a major scientific breakthrough; that there might be a law which nature uses to organize itself and that now promises to solve some of its deepest mysteries.
Oh, and it's also the title of a rather good 1993 film, in which actor Will Smith plays a magnificent role in which he breaks away from his usual mold and demonstrates he can really act; trailer linked above.
