Non-Binary Society

A non-binary approach to live, not just sex or gender, is what we need. It's a rejection of easy distinction and historical prejudice, the recognition that we are each whole individuals whose constituent parts can not be separated, regardless of our backgrounds in relation to ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, religion, social status or class.

As with so many things this starts with the rejection of the divisions embedded in the vocabulary of common parlance; it's not "mixed race," which carries in it all the historical prejudices of scientific racism, but rather "mixed heritage," indicating only that you're a child whose parents come from different cultures. Instead of being labeled as "half this, half that," implicating that you're incomplete, not once but twice, why not simply be "both," stressing that you have two homes instead of just one, with all the richness that comes with it.

I've written about it in the past, but I'll repeat here that the nation state isn't a natural occurrence but rather an invention by rulers for rulers to fill in the void left behind by the breakdown of of natural communities caused by those same rulers. There's nothing natural about all countries having a national anthem and a flag, it's straight up strange an unsettling to me that when I cross over some imaginary line on a map, suddenly everyone speaks a different language in a culture I don't recognize. Within those borders there's all kinds of dialects, slight and gradual changes from one to the other, and the same goes for customs, habits and foods, which is all natural, until we reach that imaginary line set by our conquering rulers; once we've reached that, we're in for a culture-shock.

Don't get me wrong; we do need labels, society can't function without them and to be able to communicate we need verbal representations of abstract ideas. We just need sensible labels and we need to recognize the labels forced down upon us for the sole purpose of dividing and ruling over us. We need to understand how the stratification of society serves only the ones at the top, while the rest of us are left scattered, divided and at war with each other. When some right-wing influencer tries to portray the white male as a victim of feminism gone haywire and immigrants stealing their jobs and lowering their wages, see the truth behind it, which is that it's an attempt to safeguard the very same stratification we're all victims of, and protects the position of those at the top, who are more often than not white males. Feminism is not rooted in a culture of man-hating crazy women. Leftists do not want "open borders" for the purpose of enlarging their electoral support-base. Instead they're both attempts to strike down the hierarchical structure of the white patriarchy.

We are complex beings who built complex societies, and we're not reducible to binary categorizations in any aspect of our combined existences. We have non-binary genders, non-binary heritages, non-binary social statuses, almost everything about our individual and collective identities is measured along a spectrum that's in constant motion. Conservatives and conservatism can't deal with that reality and will fight back with reactionary vengeance, as we can witness right now in the planet's mightiest nation. I'd like you all to watch the below linked video, the one that inspired this little rant. It's a TED talk by an actor I never heard of, talking about his search for his own identity as a child of a British mother and Indian father. And I'd like you to, as I did, extrapolate what he has to say to the rest of our collective and individual experiences in modern society; I hope you'll see the sense of not reserving the term "non-binary" for gender and sex alone...
