I'm going to take the side of the millions of ati-vaxxers, covid-doubters and mask-tantrum babies for a second here and say that, yes, we've been conned. We've been duped. Okay, that second is over now because the reason why we've been bamboozled is not that covid-19 is a scam or a "Chinese hoax", or that masking children is fascism, that communism is taking over the world or that QAnon was right after all...

It's none of that. We've been duped because the vaccinations aren't rolling out fast enough. We've been scammed because private healthcare companies have been given a patent on something that should be publicly owned. If you want to get mad at how the pandemic has been dealt with, get mad at the fact that billionaires used this tragedy to enrich themselves on a historically unprecedented scale. This is what should get your blood boiling.
Why? Because like everything else in capitalism too far gone, this is a case of internalizing, or privatizing profits while externalizing costs, and human lifes are among those costs. We should never loose sight of the fact that we, our tax dollars paid for all the research needed to develop the vaccines. This research has been done on college campuses and public labs. And then billionaires like Bill Gates lobbied the world's governments to make a deal with Big Pharma and give them the patents. All the vaccinations we got as children are mandated and in most cases part of a public healthcare deal, like it should be. Now we all got the first vaccination as part of such a deal, at least the ones among us who want the vaccine, but with new variants and the need for second vaccinations looming, I bet these won't be free.
In fact, the new variants are here for one reason and one reason alone; the virus was given a chance to mutate simply because world-wide not enough people got vaccinated in time. We've conquered small pox and nearly eradicated polio, and we're able to do the same with covid-19. But we didn't. Instead we privatized the production and failed miserably at distributing it in time. And for the Big Pharma billionaires to keep making the insane profits, they will allow new variants to form, just so they can sell the booster-shots. Call me a cynic, call me a huge pessimist; this is how it'll go down because capitalism doesn't leave room for alternatives. It's profits over well-being and lifes. To only focus on the naysayers is doing injustice to the larger picture, the larger scam. I just wanted to briefly say this as a follow-up on yesterday's post... Many new billionaires were created during the pandemic... That's just obscene.
